A dilapidated former mortuary complete with original embalming room has sold for a whopping ??137,000 ??? more than twice its guide price. See SWNS story SWNJmorgue. The creepy property was put up for auction with an estimate of around ??55,000 by John Pye Auctions. Auctioneers warned buyers the property in Leek, Staffs., was in need of full refurbishment or demolition. Despite its run down condition, the eerie property attracted wide interest, with some potential buyers wanting to turn it into "a spooky themed Airbnb". The old mortuary ??? which was last used to tend the dead 20 years ago ??? went under the hammer on Thursday (27/4). It sparked a bidding war until it sold for ??137,000 - ??82,000 more than expected.

An artist has been told to remove colourful sculptures from his back garden - after a council told him they broke planning laws. Toby Garrett was told his fence - addorned with hexagon patterns - and dome-shaped greenhouse need to be removed. Toby said he has been told the sculptures "cheered up" his neighbours with one design based on London's famous "Gherkin" building. But Toby has been told even if he applied for retrospective planning permission for the garden builds he would be unlikely to succeed due to the "impact on the visual amenity".
