The Trump administration has admitted to mistakenly deporting a father to El Salvador’s infamous mega prison, and claims it is unable to bring him back into the US.

Salvadoran national Kilmar Abrego Garcia was granted protected status by a US immigration judge in 2019 and was living in Maryland. On March 12, as he picked up his son after work, Abrego Garcia’s car was stopped by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents who told him his protected status had changed.

Three days later, Abrego Garcia was one of more 200 alleged members of Salvadoran and Venezuelan gangs that the Trump administration deported by plane to El Salvador’s notorious Terrorism Confinement Center (CECOT).

ICE declared it removed Abrego Garcia ‘due to his prominent role in MS-13’. Meanwhile, his attorneys said he is not linked in any way to the gang, and that he originally fled his home country to escape gang violence.

But in a court filing on Monday, lawyers with the US government acknowledged that deporting Abrego Garcia had been a mistake.

‘Although ICE was aware of his protection from removal to El Salvador, Abrego Garcia was removed to El Salvador because of an administrative error,’ wrote the government in the filing obtained by The Atlantic.

Since the dad is in Salvadoran custody, Trump administration lawyers said they are not able to get him back.

‘Oopsie… Too late,’ wrote Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele on X (formerly Twitter) on the morning of March 16.

Asked about the court filing, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt on Tuesday acknowledged the mistake, but claimed without evidence that Abrego Garcia has ties to MS-13.

‘The error that you are referring to was a clerical error. It was an administrative error,’ said Leavitt.

‘The administration maintains the position that this individual who was deported to El Salvador and will not be returning to our country was a member of the brutal and vicious MS-13 gang.’

Questioned about the evidence, Leavitt insisted: ‘There’s a lot of evidence, and the Department of Homeland Security and ICE have that evidence, and I saw it this morning.’

Abrego Garcia’s case appears to be the first time the administration has conceded to accidentally deporting someone with the right to stay in the US, after President Donald Trump invoked the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 allowing him to remove people from the country during war times.

Elon Musk is once again the world’s richest man on Forbes’ billionaires list, despite some financial hits and scrutiny he’s taken for serving the Trump administration.

Meanwhile President Donald Trump, who put Musk in charge of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), more than doubled his own net worth.

Forbes’ 39th annual World’s Billionaires list features 3,028 billionaires, which is the highest number since the ranking started in 1987. The list released on Tuesday has a record 15 individuals with 12-figure wealth, up one from last year.

The billionaires together have a $16.1trillion collective net worth.

Musk, who is a Tesla and SpaceX chief executive and owns X (formerly Twitter), grew his net worth by 75% to about $342billion. He is the first person ever to exceed $300billion in worth.

The DOGE head also retook the top spot on the list from Bernard Arnault, the chief executive of the world’s largest luxury goods company, LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton SA.

Musk enjoyed a jump with new valuations for SpaceX and xAI, and Tesla stock climbing for 12 months. For the 2025 list, Musk did not take a big hit from Tesla stock taking its biggest plunge in the first three months of this year – 36% – since 2022.

DOGE’s recommendations to cut excess spending in the federal government have been unpopular among some Democrats and unions, and there have even been acts of violence against Tesla including shots fired at a dealership in Oregon last month.

Trump, whose 2024 campaign accepted more than $277million from Musk, last month bought a new Tesla on the White House driveway in a bid to boost Tesla’s tumbling sales and stocks.

The US president’s net worth grew to about $5.1billion with shares of the Trump Media & Technology Group and successful new cryptocurrency ventures. He ranks No 700 on the list.

‘Donald Trump has presided over the most lucrative post-presidency in American history, selling his supporters NFTs, coffee-table books and, most importantly, shares of a money-losing social-media venture,’ states the Forbes list.

In second place is Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg worth $216billion, in third Amazon executive chairman Jeff Bezos worth $215billion, in fourth Oracle chairman Larry Ellison worth $192billion, and in fifth Arnault and his family worth $178billion.

‘It’s another record-breaking year for the world’s richest people, despite financial uncertainty for many and geopolitical tensions on the rise,’ stated Forbes Senior Editor of Wealth, Chase Peterson-Withorn.

‘And, from Elon Musk to Howard Lutnick and the other billionaires taking over the US government, they’re growing more and more powerful.’

Donald Trump isn’t joking about a third term – and that’s terrifying https://metro.co.uk/2025/04/01/donald-trump-isnt-joking-a-third-term-terrifying-22831733/ https://metro.co.uk/2025/04/01/donald-trump-isnt-joking-a-third-term-terrifying-22831733/#respond Tue, 01 Apr 2025 16:45:02 +0000
President Trump Holds Cabinet Meeting
In MAGA-land, grievance is disguised as logic (Picture: Samuel Corum/Sipa/Bloomberg via Getty Images)

It’s funny which bits of the Constitution are taken seriously in America.

When a young Ruth Bader Ginsburg demanded equal pay for equal work in the US Supreme Court, she was initially told the Constitution doesn’t mention ‘women’ or ‘sex’ – so tough luck.

When classrooms full of children were gunned down, multiple times, defenders of the Second Amendment insisted the Founders were clear: the right to bear arms is sacrosanct.

But now, as Donald Trump and his allies talk up the idea of him having a third term in the White House, suddenly, we’re told that the 22nd Amendment, which unequivocally states ‘no person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice’ is open to interpretation.

On Kamala Harris’s campaign last year, I repeatedly warned about three things that would happen if Trump took office again: he would criminalise abortion, abandon Ukraine, and scrap the democratic process.

Trump To Target Ticket Scalping, Fees With New Executive Order
Former advisors talk openly about Trump being ‘restored’ (Picture: Al Drago/Bloomberg via Getty Images)

In debates with everyone from Trump fanboy Nigel Farage to White House advisor Sebastian Gorka, I was dismissed as dramatic, alarmist, and out of my depth.

When I raised alarms about Project 2025 – the utterly chilling blueprint for authoritarian rule written largely by former Trump officials – I was told by Gorka it had ‘nothing to do with him.’

And yet, here we are – just 70 days into his second term, and already a third of women of reproductive age live under abortion bans. We all saw the sickening scenes with Zelensky in the White House. And at lightning speed, Trump has already enacted an estimated 42% of Project 2025.

Up Next

Now, the idea of a Trump third term isn’t a punchline anymore – it’s a plan. I’ve been in rooms with strategists, overheard campaign staff, and studied these unhinged proposals more than I care to admit.

‘But how?’ I hear incredulous readers screaming.

Well, the theory from right-wing voices is simple: yes, they concede, the Constitution lays out that no one shall be elected president more than twice. But it says nothing about succession.

Trump, the theory goes, could run as vice president in 2028 – perhaps alongside his current VP, JD Vance. If they win, Vance could be sworn in as Commander-in-Chief and then resign, allowing Trump to assume the presidency through the line of succession.

Comment nowDo you believe that Trump could serve a third term?Comment Now

This isn’t a legal argument – or one that makes much sense. But in MAGA-land, grievance is disguised as logic.

Steve Bannon – a former chief strategist to Trump who was convicted for defying a subpoena related to the January 6 Capitol riot investigation, and pled guilty to fraud – has floated the idea of ‘four more years after the next four.’

Former advisors talk openly about Trump being ‘restored’. Republican lawmakers table bills to ‘repeal the 22nd.’ At Trump rallies, I’ve seen T-shirts printed with ‘Trump 2024. 2028. 2032.’

Many assumed this was a reference to his children standing, or a joke.

But now, they are preparing for Trump to complete over a decade in the Oval Office.

This is how democracies slip (Picture: Anna Moneymaker/Getty Images)

Trump is surrounded by more loyalists and fewer checks and balances than ever before. The ‘grown-ups in the room’ (I use that term loosely) from his first term are long gone. This administration is stacked with MAGA loyalists who see constitutional norms as optional.

If they think they can force a third term – through lawsuits, executive orders, or sheer chaos – believe me, they will.

The movement isn’t trying to win on policy, governance, or compromise but through sheer brute force. They believe might is right and they’re high on power. Their plan isn’t to govern. It’s to outlast, outmaneuver, and outlive any opposition to its poisonous agenda.

This is how democracies slip: not always with tanks in the streets, but with technicalities, semantics, and very serious men in suits saying, ‘It’s actually more complicated than that.’

In Britain, we’ve been used to believing that America has institutions too sacred, a constitution too set in stone, to be broken. But opposition leadersin the US – especially those working to stop this – are under no such illusion.

Up Next

The courts are politicised. Congress is broken. State legislatures are in hock to Trump. A President who tried to overturn an election and incited an insurrection is not only not in jail – he’s been re-elected.

We need to stop treating the Trump third term as hypothetical. The groundwork is being laid right now. And from where I’m sitting – just like I predicted nationwide bans on abortion and betraying Ukraine at every turn – it’s terrifyingly plausible.

For those watching from abroad, don’t make the mistake of thinking this is America’s problem alone. We know what can happen when authoritarianism gathers pace.

In the UK, we aren’t powerless.

Rebuilding and strengthening our European alliances are essential in countering America’s democratic slip ‘n’ slide.

So the next time you hear talk of Trump’s third term, believe it. They’re not joking. They’re not testing the waters. They are planning for a third term.

And if you think the Constitution will save America from it – well, you haven’t been paying attention.

US prosecutors will seek the death penalty for Luigi Mangione, the Ivy League graduate accused of shooting dead a UnitedHealthcare CEO.

Attorney General Pam Bondi on Tuesday morning directed prosecutors to pursue capital punishment for Mangione, 26, who has a sizable fanbase supporting his alleged anti-insurance company greed message.

‘Mangione’s murder of Brian Thompson – an innocent man and father of two young children – was a premeditated, cold-blooded assassination that shocked America,’ stated Bondi.

‘After careful consideration, I have directed federal prosecutors to seek the death penalty in this case as we carry out President Trump’s agenda to stop violent crime and Make America Safe Again.’

One federal charge that Mangione faces, murder through use of a firearm, carries the death penalty if convicted. Federal prosecutors had been mulling whether to seek it since Mangione was accused of killing Thompson, 50, outside a Midtown Manhattan hotel on December 4.

Mangione has not entered a plea to the federal charges, but has pleaded not guilty to state charges which do not make him eligible for the death penalty if convicted. Mangione faces possible life in prison without parole for a first-degree murder charge brought by the Manhattan district attorney’s office.

President Donald Trump on the first day of his second term signed an executive order for the Justice Department to seek the death penalty for ‘crimes of a severity demanding its use’. By contrast, former President Joe Biden in 2021 placed a moratorium on executions at the federal level.

Mangione’s lawyers did not immediately comment on Bondi’s announcement.

A fundraiser for Magione’s legal defense has received more than $720,000 in donations.

Mangione was arrested at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, five days after Thompson was gunned down while walking to his company’s investors’ conference at the New York Hilton Midtown.

Federal prosecutors in murder charges filed on December 14 alleged that Mangione ‘meticulously’ plotted the shooting. Authorities recovered a manifesto and notebook writings in which Mangione allegedly wrote of his intent to ‘wack’ an insurance company chief executive.

Mangione’s state case was expected to go to trial before his federal one, and it is not immediately clear if Bondi’s decision will affect that plan.

Why Donald Trump’s Liberation Day could be about to make life harder for Brits https://metro.co.uk/2025/04/01/donald-trumps-liberation-day-make-life-harder-brits-22827710/ https://metro.co.uk/2025/04/01/donald-trumps-liberation-day-make-life-harder-brits-22827710/#respond Tue, 01 Apr 2025 13:50:56 +0000
Donald Trump has threatened to impose tariffs on countries around the world (Picture: Metro/Getty)

Donald Trump has declared tomorrow will be ‘Liberation Day’ for the US, when his country will shake off any reliance it has on other countries for products and supplies.

But in the rest of the world – and for many in the US itself – the prospect of sweeping, scattershot, international tariffs being introduced all at once conjures feelings of dread rather than freedom.

For the UK, it’s more than a little embarrassing too.

You may remember that at the end of February, Keir Starmer travelled to the White House just after announcing a big increase in defence spending (partially to appease the US) and offered Trump a second state visit.

At the moment, it seems those efforts have not borne fruit. The PM admitted this morning it was likely the UK would not be spared from the President’s tariffs.

He told Sky News: ‘The likelihood is there will be tariffs. Nobody welcomes that.

Craig Munro breaks down Westminster chaos into easy to follow insight, walking you through what the latest policies mean to you. Sign up here.

‘We are obviously working with the sectors most impacted at pace on that. Nobody wants to see a trade war but I have to act in the national interest.’

How will Trump’s tariffs affect the UK?

This will likely mean a rough start to April for many Brits will only become rougher.

Today, a raft of tax and bill increases come into effect – energy bills, water bills, phone bills, broadband bills, TV licences, council tax and car tax are all going up. Businesses have warned a rise in National Insurance Contributions kicking in today will also force up prices.

A simultaneous increase in the minimum wage and living wage will mitigate the impacts for some, but there’s no doubt life in the UK is getting more expensive.

Up Next

What are tariffs and what impact do they have?

A tariff is a tax on imported goods from other countries.

Companies that bring in items from overseas – in order to sell them or use them in the manufacturing process – pay these taxes to the government.

If you listen to Donald Trump describing them, they might sound like a silver bullet that will save the US economy. He says his tariffs will encourage customers and firms to buy US products.

But the reality is more complicated.

Businesses that want to avoid tariffs could take years to rearrange their supply lines, and in the meantime, it’s not unusual for them to pass on their higher prices onto customers.

That doesn’t just affect US businesses either – it’ll have an impact on UK businesses that deal in the US too.

Even if other countries don’t retaliate by imposing their own import taxes on the US – as several of them have said they will do – the interconnected nature of global trade means prices could rise around the world.

Part of the reason Trump’s tariff threats are concerning figures in the British government so much is because of the uncertainty around them.

We already know a 25% tariff will be introduced on all cars being imported to the US, a move that will hammer the British automotive industry.

But there’s a conspicuous lack of detail on the broader round that has been promised. Speculation suggests Trump may choose to respond to the rate of VAT by imposing import taxes of 20% on the UK.

If that happens, business will suddenly get a lot more expensive for many British firms, and that will mean further price rises for customers.

Up Next

Is the UK imposing its own tariffs on the US?

Then there’s the question of whether the UK will choose to reciprocate on any tariffs that are imposed, as many other countries have said they will do.

Starmer has said ‘all options remain on the table’, but emphasised his hopes that a trade deal will be struck with the US.

Economists at the Office for Budget Responsibility, the official body that checks the Treasury’s numbers, have warned placing our own tariffs on US goods would damage the UK’s finances even further.

Why Donald Trump's Liberation Day could be about to make life harder for Brits
A graph showing how the UK’s GDP could be affected if the US places tariffs on all countries [1] and if countries including the UK add their own tariffs on US [2] (Source: Office for Budget Responsibility)

And that’s a risk the government desperately wants to avoid. Last Wednesday, Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced her spring statement with a bruising series of cuts to benefits and a relatively small amount of headroom.

If the worst-case scenario plays out, she could end up almost back at square one just a week later.

I felt a renewed sense of bone deep conviction that we let too many men be famous (Picture: Getty/Metro.co.uk)

Rachel Zegler is ‘exceptionally beautiful’ but a ‘spoiled, ungrateful and disconnected brat’.

When I woke up to headlines that John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s son, Sean Ono Lennon, had said that about Rachel Zegler, I felt a renewed sense of bone deep conviction that we let too many men be famous.

Your dad wrote Imagine so you get to give your unsolicited opinion on the hotness of women you’ve never met? You may say that I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one absolutely sick of this s***.

Lennon’s social media remarks are just the latest in what has been a firestorm of controversy surrounding Disney’s Snow White remake – and nepo babies like Sean have been right in the centre of the action.

To catch everyone up, Zegler, 23, stars as the titular princess in the controversial new film, while Gal Gadot appears as the Evil Queen. But despite high hopes, Snow White had a dismal start at the box office, amassing just $45million (£34.8m) in the US and $100m (£77.3m) worldwide in its opening weekend.

Then, Variety released a piece on that some fans felt unfairly blamed Zegler’s views about President Donald Trump and Palestine for the poor performance.

Not long after, Sean Ono Lennon chimed in with his two cents. In a now-deleted tweet, Lennon, 48, whose bio reads: ‘Mega Nepo Baby’ wrote: ‘Both Gal Gadot AND Rachel Zegler are exceptionally beautiful women. Some of y’all are bugging.’

An X user replied to Lennon defending Zegler, as they said: ‘Both actresses are good performers, yet Zegler does not deserve the vilification that Variety and a lot of Disney “fan boys” are constantly giving her.’

Up Next

Then Lennon added: ‘I agree the vilification went too far. But she also acts like a spoiled, ungrateful and disconnected brat. So it’s no surprise.’

Not only is there nothing more grating than a man snidely explaining, ‘Sorry, how women look actually does matter!’ but it’s bitterly funny for a man born into the kind of wealth and privilege Lennon was to call someone else ‘disconnected.’

He joins another nepo baby – Snow White producer Mark Platt’s son, Jonah – in taking up too much space in a cultural conversation.

After Zegler tweeted ‘always remember, free Palestine’ in August last year, Variety reported that producer of the film, Marc Platt, flew to New York to meet with Zegler in an attempt to get her to take the post down, which she allegedly refused.

So how did Jonah Platt get involved?

In the aftermath of the report, a social media commenter posted on Platt’s Instagram saying : ‘Your dad flew to NYC to reprimand a young actress about this? Any words on this? Cuz that’s creepy as hell and uncalled for. People have the right to free speech, no? Shame on your father.’

Jonah penned a fiery response, which he later deleted, but according to The Hollywood Reporter it read: ‘Yeah, my dad, the producer of enormous piece of Disney IP with hundreds of millions of dollars on the line, had to leave his family to fly across the country to reprimand his 20 year old employee for dragging her personal politics into the middle of promoting the movie for which she signed a multi-million dollar contract to get paid and do publicity for.’

He added: ‘This is called adult responsibility and accountability. And her actions clearly hurt the film’s box office.’

Between Lennon and Platt, one has to wonder why these men are qualified to share their opinions at all.

Lennon’s X post has hundreds of interactions and is being widely discussed online, while Platt’s statement has been published in nearly every major publication.

And make no mistake, what Platt so condescendingly called shirking ‘adult responsibility’ and Lennon labelled acting like a ‘spoiled brat’ is free speech, plain and simple.

"Cindy & The Disco Ball: The Musical" Influencer Event
What Platt implied in his post is that Zegler should take the money she was given to play Snow White (Picture: Paul Archuleta/Getty Images)

Platt is correct that ‘free speech does not mean you’re allowed to say whatever you want’ without ‘repercussions’, but it looks to me like a mega-corporation attempting to shut down an actress’ ability to advocate for causes she believes in.

What Platt implied in his post is that Zegler should take the money she was given to play Snow White and keep her mouth shut to avoid putting Disney’s investment in jeopardy.

Lennon seems to feel similarly, acting as though it’s somehow ‘ungrateful’ for Zegler to use her platform to express her politics.

Neither Lennon nor Platt mentioned that Zegler has weathered her share of ugliness, with controversy surrounding the film beginning nearly four years ago when Zegler, who is of Colombian descent, faced racist backlash after she was cast as Disney’s original princess, most famous for having ‘skin as white as snow.’

But this didn’t receive as much of the blame for the film’s failure as Zegler’s refusal to just shut up and look pretty, as it seems men like Platt and Lennon would prefer she do.

As I prepared to write a piece about this pair of Daddy’s boys and their bad online takes, I couldn’t help but feel hesitant to further platform their opinions.

They have a right, as much as Zegler, to share their views on anything they see fit. But the only reason we even know about them is their famous and powerful parents.

What makes a culture interesting is diversity: Diversity of lived experience, diversity of opinion, and diversity of intersectional identity.

If nepo babies like Lennon and Platt think Rachel Zegler – an accomplished artist who has every right to use her platform as she sees fit – doesn’t deserve the influence she has, how can they possibly justify their own loud voices?

Maybe it’s time we let the nepo babies shout into the void until they can prove they have something valuable to say. Unfortunately, that day is not today.

President Donald Trump invited Kid Rock to the Oval Office to watch him sign an executive order concerning the music industry – but almost forgot to sign the document.

The American signer and rapper on Monday evening stood next to Trump, who sat at the resolute desk to sign the order aimed at stopping exploitive ticket scalping that often involves bots buying sections of seats and reselling them to fans for more.

Kid Rock’s visit started with the musician explaining that scalpers often buy tickets in bulk and prevent loyal fans from getting them at reasonable prices and that artists do not make any additional money. He also mentioned that for decades, fans buying tickets will see exorbitant fees at checkout.

Trump appeared engrossed with Kid Rock, who wore a flashy American flag suit celebrating the country’s 250th anniversary. The outfit included red, white and blue designs including eagles and a white hat with a matching ribbon. It was so extravagant that a reporter asked Trump if he would ever wear one.

‘I don’t know, I was thinking about wearing it tomorrow,’ said Trump jokingly of April Fools Day. ‘We’ve got a big day coming up.’

Trump then took questions from reporters and addressed a wide range of topics including his plan to visit Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar as his first foreign trip.

After numerous questions the session was cut off and as reporters started to leave and say thank you to Trump, someone could be heard asking him if he was going to sign the executive order – which was the purpose of Kid Rock’s visit.

Trump threw both of his hands up and immediately picked up his signature thick black marker.

‘Boy, that was good,’ the president said. ‘OK ready everybody?’

Trump signed the document and passed the folder over to Kid Rock.

‘Oh you better do well with this,’ Trump told him. ‘He’s going to do it, make sure everything is nice and clean.’

Kid Rock replied: ‘Make America Fun Again.’

‘You’re not in a clean industry,’ Trump continued. ‘Hold that up. OK? Thank you everybody.’

In his remarks earlier, Kid Rock thanked Trump for getting the executive order in motion ‘at lightning speed’. He added that he hopes the US government can one day set a cap on the resale of tickets.

‘I can’t control the ticket prices right now, so hopefully this is a step to be able to make that happen,’ the singer said.

Amidst an eventful first two months back at the White House, Trump has invited multiple celebrities to the Oval Office who support his policies.

Earlier this month, UFC champion Conor McGregor visited Trump in the Oval Office as part of St Patrick’s Day celebrations and embarked on an unexpected anti-immigrant rant. Days later, he announced he would run to be the Irish president and donned a green ‘Make Ireland Great Again’ hat.

Donald Trump has threatened to bomb Iran unless a new nuclear deal is reached, only escalating tensions in a region already on edge.

‘If they do not make a deal, there will be bombing,’ the US president told NBC News on Sunday.

He added: ‘There is a chance that if they do not make a deal, that I will do secondary tariffs on them like I did four years ago, that brought them to a position that they very much wanted to be.’

Iran’s leaders fired back, warning that ‘someone in a glass room does not throw stones at anyone’ – a clear reference to America’s military presence in the Middle East.

Iran fires back at Trump’s bomb threat

Commander of the IRGC Aerospace Force, Amir Ali Hajizadeh, said: ‘The Americans have at least 10 bases with 50,000 troops in the region, which means they are sitting in a glass room.’

With more than a dozen US bases in the region – all within Iran’s missile range – the exchange of threats has reignited fears that a miscalculation could spark a devastating war.

As of October 2024, US defence officials said there were at least 43,000 servicemembers in the Middle East, many on ships at sea, according to the Council on Foreign Relations.

In total, the US has military facilities across at least 19 sites – eight of them considered to be permanent by many regional analysts – in countries like Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, and the United Arab Emirates.

The US military also uses large bases in Djibouti and Turkey, which are part of other regional commands but often contribute significantly to missions in the Middle East.

Iran’s military arsenal largest in region

Meanwhile, Iran boasts more than 3,000 ballistic missiles, the largest arsenal in the Middle East, and has shown willingness to use them if it is pushed into a corner.

Up Next

This arsenal does not include its burgeoning land-attack cruise missile force.

Vast improvements have also been made over the past decade in the precision and accuracy of the missiles.

Many Iranian missiles are also inherently capable of carrying nuclear payloads, which has long been an international concern.

Timeline of nuclear fallout

The first steps of the fallout between Iran and the US were made during Trump’s first term in the White House, in 2017-2021.

A 2015 deal with global superpowers required Iran to limit its nuclear ambitions in exchange for sanctions relief.

But in 2018, the US leader withdrew, imposing sweeping sanctions.

It was after that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said that Iran had amassed enough fissile material for multiple bombs but had made no effort to build one.

On March 7, Trump said he had written to Khamenei, warning that he must either agree to fresh negotiations or face a military confrontation.

But Iranian president Masoud Pezeshkian has ruled out direct negotiations with the Trump administration over the country’s nuclear programme.

Instead, he has signalled a willingness for ‘indirect talks’.

When asked about why she moved, Rosie continued: ‘The President of the United States has it out for me and has for 20 years, when I told the truth about him on a program called The View – where it was my job to talk about pop culture, politics…

‘I mentioned his bankruptcies, I mentioned all of the sexual assault charges and I mentioned that he was not, in fact, the businessman that everyone thinks he is because of the show, The Apprentice, where they sold a bunch of lies to America for over 10 years, and half of America believed it.

‘He was very angry to say the least, and he hasn’t let it go. And he uses me as a punchline whenever he feels the need.’

She has said she feels ‘healthier’ since leaving the US, revealing she is ‘sleeping better without the stress and anxiety’ of worrying about the political climate.

Can Trump run for a third term? Donald Trump has decided to get a head start on the pranks – with April’s Fools just around the corner – except he insists this one is real.

The US president once again floated the idea of outstaying his welcome at the White House and running for a third term.

While the 22nd Amendment makes that impossible, at least legally, he has long treated it as more of a suggestion rather than the law.

In a Sunday morning phone call with NBC News, he said ‘I am not joking,’ when asked to clarify a remark on seeking another term, adding: ‘There are methods which you could do it.’

The 78-year-old’s comments were the most concrete in terms of referring to plans in place to achieve the goal.

So, can the president stand for a third term? Will he? And what could the consequences be?

What has Trump said about running for third term?

It is not the first time that the Republican has dangled the idea of a never-ending reign in the White House.

He has previously ‘joked’ about running for life, reminding of authoritarians like Russia’s Vladimir Putin, Turkey’s Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and China’s Xi Jinping.

‘We have almost four years to go and that’s a long time but despite that so many people are saying you’ve got to run again. They love the job we are doing,’ Trump said Sunday aboard the presidential jet, apparently referring to his political allies and supporters.

With his latest comment, he could be trying to test the Democrats’ and the media before ploughing ahead with searching for loopholes in the US legal system.

Can Trump run for president again?

Under the 22nd Amendment, no person can be president more than twice. It was added to the Constitution in 1951 after Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected four times in a row.

It reads: ‘No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once.’

Any attempt to remain in office would be legally suspect and it is unclear how seriously Trump might pursue the idea.

His own attorney general Pam Bondi said during her Senate confirmation hearing that he is unable to run for a third term under the Constitution as it now stands.

Asked if Trump was allowed to run for a third term in 2028, she responded: ‘No senator, not unless they change the Constitution.’

How could the Constitution be changed or overturned?

Amending the US Constitution to allow a third presidential term would require a two-thirds majority in both the House of Representatives and Senate, which Trump’s Republican Party does not have, or a constitutional convention called by two thirds of the states that would propose changes to the charter.

Both routes appear to be unlikely, given the current number of states and Congressional seats under Republican control.

Whether he goes through Congress or the states, he would then require ratification from three-quarters of all state legislatures.

A constitutional convention has never been successfully called in the US where all 27 constitutional amendments have been passed by the congressional method.

In January, days after Trump took office, Republican Andy Ogles of Tennessee introduced a House joint resolution to amend the constitution to allow presidents up to three terms.

What will happen if Trump is allowed to run again?

Pushing for a third term would put Trump in line with other controversial world leaders who have managed to defy legal term limits.

Trump would be 82 at the end of his second term in 2028. This would mean that he would be at least 86 by the end of a third term.

Donald Trump broke the ice during crucial talks with Sir Keir Starmer by talking about King Charles.

The US President sent a friendly message to the monarch as he spoke with the PM ahead of a 25% tax on car imports and threats of wider tariffs on other goods this week.

During the phone call, the politician passed on his best wishes to King Charles, who had to cancel a recent engagement due to side effects from his cancer treatment.

His Majesty was spotted leaving Clarence House for the first time since he was hospitalised for ‘a short period of observation’.

Following reports about Charles’ health, a Downing Street spokesperson said: ‘The prime minister spoke to president Trump this evening.

Number 10 has only a few days to negotiate an exemption from tariffs on imports into the US.

Trump announced a 25% import tax will be introduced on all cars imported to the US, a measure expected to hit British luxury car makers such as Rolls-Royce and Aston Martin.

The levy is on top of a series of tariffs set to come into effect on the same date, which could include a general 20% tax on UK products in response to the rate of VAT.

Trump has branded April 2 ‘Liberation Day’ for America, as he claimed the tariffs he plans to introduce will free the US from foreign goods and boost its domestic economy.

But Britain is arguing that – unlike other countries – it has a relatively equal trading relationship with the US.

Sir Keir has stressed he does not want to jump into a trade war, but he has said the UK ‘reserves the right’ to introduce reciprocal tariffs on the US.

Talks between the two leaders are said to be intense, with moves to drop or even abolish a British tax on US big tech firms among the bargaining chips.

‘They discussed the productive negotiations between their respective teams on a UK-US economic prosperity deal, agreeing that these will continue at pace this week,’ the spokesperson said.

Earlier this morning, home secretary Yvette Cooper told Sky News the government is ‘acting in the national interest’.

She said: ‘We obviously can’t keep a running commentary on different discussions that are taking place, but we have to always make sure that we’re acting in the national interest.’

Trump has now threatened to lump huge sanctions on Russia after his relationship with Putin turned sour over the weekend.

He said he is ‘very angry’ and ‘pissed off’ over Putin’s recent attack on Volodymyr Zelensky.

The President threatened the Kremlin with secondary tariffs of 25% to 50% on all Russian oil if ceasefire negotiations continue to hit a brick wall.

Trump and Putin
There seem to be cracks in the ‘friendship’ between the two leaders

Donald Trump has voiced his anger towards Vladimir Putin – a major shift from the softer approach the US president has taken in ongoing talks to end the war in Ukraine.

He threatened the Kremlin with his weapon of choice – secondary tariffs of 25% to 50% on all Russian oil if his efforts to negotiate a ceasefire deal are thwarted.

Putin rejected a US-Ukrainian plan for a 30-day ceasefire, and suggested that Volodymyr Zelensky be removed from office as part of the process.

In response, Trump told NBC News: ‘If Russia and I are unable to make a deal on stopping the bloodshed in Ukraine, and if I think it was Russia’s fault — which it might not be — but if I think it was Russia’s fault, I am going to put secondary tariffs on oil, on all oil coming out of Russia.

‘That would be that if you buy oil from Russia, you can’t do business in the US.

‘There will be a 25% tariff on all oil, a 25- to 50-point tariff on all oil.’

The US president said the tariffs would come within a month if a deal is not reached.

He also stressed that he is ‘very angry’ and ‘pissed off’ over Putin’s recent attack on his Ukrainian counterpart, suggesting that Ukraine should implement a transitional government as any part of a deal, effectively pushing the war leader out of power.

Trump said that such comments were ‘not going in the right location’ for peace talks.

He further announced plans to speak with Putin this week and stressed their ‘very good relationship’, quickly adding that ‘anger dissipates quickly … if he does the right thing.’

Since entering the White House, Trump has been pushing for a speedy end to the more than three-year war and holding meetings with both Russian and Ukrainian officials to facilitate it.

After all, the politician repeatedly touted that he would achieve a ceasefire on his first day in office during his campaign trail.

After saying Greenland was ‘cold as shit’, US Vice President JD Vance slammed Denmark for ‘under-investing’ in the territory’s security.

He and Second Lady Usha Vance landed with a US delegation to visit the self-governing, mineral-rich territory of Denmark that Donald Trump has suggested the US should take over.

Initially Usha had announced a solo trip to the Avannaata Qimussersu dog sled race in Sisimiut. Vance then said he would join her, only to change the itinerary again – after protests from Greenland and Denmark – to a one-day visit of the couple to the military post only.

Vance visited US troops at Pituffik Space Base on the mineral-rich, strategically critical island.

He slammed the territory’s ruling nation in remarks, saying: ‘Our message to Denmark is very simple: you have not done a good job by the people of Greenland.

‘You have underinvested in the people of Greenland, and you have under-invested in the security architecture of this incredible, beautiful landmass filled with incredible people. That has to change.’

Vance also said the US has ‘no option’ but to take a significant position to ensure the security of Greenland.

‘I think that they ultimately will partner with the United States,’ he added.

‘We could make them much more secure. We could do a lot more protection. And I think they’d fare a lot better economically as well.’

Vance’s trip was overshadowed by angry Greenlanders and Danes, who expressed outrage that the original itinerary was planned without consulting them.

Friday’s one-day visit to the US Space Force outpost at Pituffik, on the north-west coast of Greenland, removed the risk of potentially violating diplomatic custom by sending a delegation to another country without an official invitation.

It also reduced the likelihood that Vance and his wife would cross paths with residents angered by Trump’s announcements.

Trump previously slammed Denmark’s control over Greenland after previously saying the US should take it over.

‘A boat landed there 200 years ago or something. And they say they have rights to it,’ Trump said. I don’t know if that’s true. I don’t think it is, actually.’

All five parties in Greenland’s parliament issued a joint statement last week rejecting Mr Trump’s remarks.

Denmark has recognised Greenland’s right to independence at a time of its choosing.

Beyond his focus on Greenland, Trump has refused to rule out military intervention in Panama to retake that country’s canal, saying that Canada should be America’s 51st state.

He also suggested that US interests could assume control of the war-torn Gaza Strip from Israel and redevelop it as a “Riviera”-like seaside resort.

The jostle over federal funding threw a spanner into the effort finding the abducted youngsters, campaigners say (Picture: Reuters/AP/REX/Getty

US President Donald Trump has U-turned his decision to cut funding for a team to track down Ukrainian children stolen by Russia.

Nearly 20,000 children have been abducted by Vladimir Putin’s forces since he launched his invasion in 2022, according to Ukraine.

The Yale School of Public Health Humanitarian Research Lab has spent years rescuing hundreds of these kidnapped children.

But the group’s funding was gutted by Elon Musk’s cost-cutting agency, the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, it was revealed this month.

Amid international outcry, the Trump administration has reversed this decision, officials told The Washington Post today.

Funding will be restored for at least six weeks.

Yale’s initiative, called the Conflict Observatory, sees experts use open-source information and commercial satellite imagery to find the children.

Exactly how many children have been taken is unclear, but campaigners say Russia may have carried out the largest state-sponsored kidnapping of children in modern history.

Yale researchers have pinpointed 6,000 children taken to Russia and more than 2,400 to Belarus.

Many have not only been torn away from their loved ones, but have been tortured, denied food and forced into militaristic education.

At least 314 youngsters have become trapped in Russia’s adoption and foster system and made Russian citizens, a move that Ukraine says is erasing their Ukrainian identities and indoctrinating them with Moscow’s agenda.

A Russian parliamentarian claimed last July ‘700,000 children had found refuge’ in Russia.

This information is shared with Europol and the International Criminal Court (ICC), which is trying to bring war crime charges against Russian officials.

In 2023, the court issued arrest warrants for Putin of Russia and the Kremlin’s children’s rights commissioner, Maria Lvova-Belova, for deporting children from Ukraine.

But the Yale researchers have struggled to work since January after Trump signed an executive order freezing all foreign aid.

The news was criticised on both sides of the political aisle, with Democrats and Republicans in Congress and Christian groups urging Trump to spare the observatory.

Greg Landsman, a Democratic Representative in Ohio, said in a letter to the White House: ‘The termination of this contract never should have happened, but I’m grateful to see State change its mind.

‘This shows that bipartisan, bicameral pressure got the administration to change course, but this still isn’t good enough.’

With funding now resorted, for now at least, Yale researchers will continue sending their data to EU police officials, the State Department said.

What will happen once the provisional funding ends is unknown.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has threatened the US against making any ‘encroachments’ on the Arctic as President Donald Trump continues to pursue Greenland.

Putin raised Trump’s interest in acquiring Greenland and said Russia will not stand idly and allow NATO to make advances in the Arctic.

‘We will not allow encroachments on the sovereignty of our country and will reliably protect our national interests,’ Putin said at the Arctic Forum in Russia on Thursday.

Putin said that Trump’s plan to annex Greenland is by no means new or unique to his administration.

‘It can look surprising only at first glance and it would be wrong to believe that this is some sort of extravagant talk by the current US administration,’ Putin said.

‘It’s obvious that the United States will continue to systematically advance its geostrategic, military-political and economic interests in the Arctic.’

Trump has expressed time and time again his plans to acquire Greenland, and even refused to rule out using military force. He has argued that the world’s largest island is at a key geographic location for the US and that it holds a large source of natural resources that have been untapped.

Putin mentioned that Finland and Sweden are part of NATO and made it known that possible conflict in the Arctic region is on his radar.

‘Russia has never threatened anyone in the Arctic, but we will closely follow the developments and mount an appropriate response by increasing our military capability and modernizing military infrastructure,’ he said.

Putin vowed to boost his country’s military presence in the Arctic region. At the same time, he urged joint projects with the West.

‘The stronger our positions will be, the more significant the results will be and the broader opportunities we will have to launch international projects in the Arctic involving the countries that are friendly to us, and, possibly, Western countries if they show interest in joint work,’ he said.

Putin spoke on the issue a day before Vice President JD Vance and his wife were scheduled to visit a US military base in Greenland.

Marjorie Taylor Greene tirade like ‘bad reality show’, body language expert says https://metro.co.uk/2025/03/27/sky-news-reporter-mocked-a-british-accent-us-congresswoman-22801019/ https://metro.co.uk/2025/03/27/sky-news-reporter-mocked-a-british-accent-us-congresswoman-22801019/#respond Thu, 27 Mar 2025 10:23:57 +0000

A Trump-loving Republican congresswoman who told a British journalist to ‘go back to your country’ because of her accent acted like she was in a ‘bad reality show’, an expert has said.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, from Georgia, ridiculed Sky News reporter Martha Kelner as soon as she caught wind of her British accent.

The 50-year-old Republican and Trump loyalist had just left a committee hearing on funding for public broadcasters when she began taking questions from reporters.

She was flooded with questions on the controversy over how a journalist was added to a group chat on air strikes in Yemen with top US officials, but when U.S. Correspondent Kelner decided to chip in all hell broke loose.

‘Should the Defense Secretary—,’ she asked before Green, known as MTG, interjected.

‘What country are you from?’ Greene asked as she rolled her eyes.

Rep MTG shamelessly deflects to the past instead of addressing the failings of the current administration
MTG was fired up over the scandal (Picture: CSPAN)

As sooner as Kelner answer ‘the U.K.’, MTG then ripped into the reporter saying: ‘Go back to your country.’

Greene continued her rant: ‘Okay, we don’t give a crap about your opinion and your reporting. Why don’t you go back to your country where you have a major migrant problem? You should care about your own borders.’

Judi James, a body language expert, told Metro: ‘Marjorie Taylor-Greene, in particular, is known to have no filter. In this video, you can really only describe her body language as pure contempt. It signalled someone that somebody was enjoying the sense of superiority – being able to sort of be so dismissive.

‘Her chin was raised. Her brows were raised. She was looking down her nose at the journalist. Her hand was outstretched, flattened, a dismissive gesture.

‘It was the type of gesture that you generally don’t really see unless it’s on a bad reality show. You don’t expect to see this in the political arena.’

But Ms James said she doesn’t think MTG ‘realises’ what she’s done after going on the tirade.

‘I think what she’s gonna find now is a journalist deliberately speaking to her to get her to swear or shout. If you know somebody overreacts like that, they will see if they can sort of get a rise out of her,’ she observed.

This isn’t the first time MTG has forcefully told a reporter from the USA’s closest ally where to go.

Last year she told Emily Maitlis, formerly of the BBC and now with The News Agents podcast, to ‘f**k off’ after the veteran broadcaster quizzed her on her support for conspiracy theories involving ‘Jewish space lasers’.

WASHINGTON, DC - MARCH 26: U.S. Rep. Jason Crow (D-CO) speaks in front of text messages by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth during an annual worldwide threats assessment hearing at the Longworth House Office Building on March 26, 2025 in Washington, DC. In the exchange at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, Maitlis asked: ‘Can you tell me why so many people who support Donald Trump love conspiracy theories, including yourself? He seems to attract lots of conspiracy theorists.’

MTG replied: ‘You’re a conspiracy theorist, and the left and the media spread more conspiracy theories. We like the truth, we like supporting our Constitution, our freedoms, and America First.’

Pushed on her own support for conspiracy theories, MTG said: ‘No, why don’t you go talk about Jewish space lasers, and really, why don’t you f**k off.’

Why does MTG seem to take such a petulant approach to the media, including journalists from the UK? It’s all part of a strategy, Kelner wrote after her own run-in with the MAGA die-hard.

Last night, Kelner said: ‘Discrediting the messenger, rather than focusing on the message and what lessons can be learned, is the order of the day for the Trump White House.’

She had tried to force a reply from MTG on her questions about the Signal ‘war plans’ leak, attempting to shout over the politician so she could be heard.

She asked Greene: ‘Do you care about American lives being put at risk?’

But the Trump support screamed back: ‘I don’t care about your fake news.’

Greene then turned her attention to an American reporter, who wanted to get an answer to Kelner’s question.

MTG refused to be drawn on this however, and so the American asked a similar question about the Signal chat scandal.

For the past two days, top White House officials have faced relentless pressure from lawmakers and the press on the scandal.

Questions have been asked about why President Donald Trump’s national security team was sharing sensitive information in an unsecured manner.

Once Greene was probed on this again, she launched another furious reply: ‘You want to know about complete disregard about operational security?

‘You should talk about the Biden administration and how they ripped our borders open to terrorists, cartels, child sex trafficking, human trafficking, and drug trafficking across our borders for four years.

Greene similarly told a British journalist to ‘go back to your country,’ in 2022.

A Turkish woman with a valid visa has become the latest victim of Donald Trump’s crusade to deport foreign students from the US who disagree with his policies.

Rumeysa Ozturk, who criticised her university’s response to Israel’s war on Gaza, was detained and had her visa terminated in what has been branded a ‘state sanctioned political kidnapping’.

Footage shows her being ambushed by plainclothes-masked Department of Homeland Security agents as she was on her way to break her Ramadan fast.

The 30-year-old had just left her home in Somerville, in Massachusetts, on Tuesday evening when she was surrounded.

Six people – dressed in black and their faces covered by masks – are shown handcuffing the PhD student and confiscating her phone as she screams for help.

Ozturk is heard asking if she can call police before one of the agents pulls out their badge.

‘We are the police,’ the agents are heard saying in the video, taken from an apartment window by a resident.

Neighbours said they were rattled by the arrest, which they said looked like a ‘kidnapping’.

Michael Mathis, a software engineer whose surveillance camera captured the arrest, said: ‘They approach her and start grabbing her with their faces covered.

‘They are covering their faces. They are in unmarked vehicles.’

The ICE locator database has listed the student as being held in the ‘South Louisiana Processing Center’ in Basile, Louisiana – more than 1,400 miles away from where she was detained.

Her lawyer, Mahsa Khanbabai, told reporters that her team is unaware of her whereabouts, has been unable to contact her, and that no charges have been filed against his clients that they are aware of.

He added in a statement: ‘Rumeysa Ozturk is a Turkish national who was maintaining valid F-1 status as a PhD student at Tufts University.

A string of arrests under Trump's administration

Ozturk’s arrest is the latest in a growing list of Trump’s crackdown on foreign students and university faculty members who have spoken out against Israel’s war in Gaza.

In January, the president signed executive orders to make sure that noncitizens in the US do not bear hostility toward the country and do not advocate for foreign terrorists and to combat antisemitism.

Immigration authorities have made several arrests under the policies, including Mahmoud Khalil and at least four others.

Another one who fled to Canada in fear of being arrest.

‘Rumeysa was heading to meet with friends to break her Ramadan fast on the evening of March 25 when she was detained near her home in Somerville, MA by DHS agents.’

Since her arrest, a DHS spokesperson has claimed – without evidence – that ‘DHS and ICE investigations found Ozturk engaged in activities in support of Hamas’.

US District Judge Indira Talwani issued an order giving the government until tomorrow to answer why Ozturk was being detained.

Talwani also ordered that the student not be moved outside the District of Massachusetts without 48 hours advance notice.

A senior DHS spokesperson confirmed the incident and the termination of her visa.

‘DHS and (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) investigations found Ozturk engaged in activities in support of Hamas, a foreign terrorist organization that relishes the killing of Americans,’ they said.

‘A visa is a privilege, not a right. Glorifying and supporting terrorists who kill Americans is grounds for visa issuance to be terminated. This is common sense security.’

Ozturk cowrote article criticizing university response to Palestinian issues and was one of four students last March who wrote an op-ed in The Tufts Daily criticizing the university’s response to its community union Senate passing resolutions that demanded Tufts ‘acknowledge the Palestinian genocide’.

Friends said she was not otherwise closely involved in protests against Israel.

But after the piece was published, her name, photo and work history were featured by Canary Mission, a website that says it documents people who ‘promote hatred of the US, Israel and Jews on North American college campuses.’

The op-ed was the only cited example of ‘anti-Israel activism’ by Ozturk.

Students and faculty elsewhere also have recently had visas revoked or been blocked from entering the US because they attended demonstrations or publicly expressed support for Palestinians.

Trump ‘s administration has cited a seldom-invoked statute authorizing the secretary of state to revoke visas of noncitizens who could be considered a threat to foreign policy interests.

Deep beneath the earth, Iran’s so-called ‘Missile City’ stretches through fortified tunnels, housing various weapons.

Newly released footage from Iranian state media offers a rare glimpse of the underground complex – one of the largest such facilities in the Islamic Republic.

The tunnels are lined with thousands of precision-guided missiles, state media claimed.

KheibarShekan (900-mile range), Haj Qassem (850-mile range), Ghadr H, (1,240-mile range), Sejjil (1,550-mile range), and Emad (1,050-mile range) are believed to be housed there.

Set to dramatic music, the video is a propaganda tool in a show of strength amid escalating tensions with the US and Israel, which could soon reach boiling point.

It is meant to be a stark display of military might, reinforcing the country’s role in the Middle East.

This is believed to be one of the largest such facilities in the Islamic Republic.

This is the third such location unveiled by Iran’s regime in recent weeks. Its military has previously released images of similar underground facilities.

This has caused some speculation that it may be an older site repurposed for a fresh media campaign.

Two senior Iranian military figures, chief of staff of the armed forces major general Mohammad Hossein Bagheri and IRGC aerospace force commander Amir Ali Hajizadeh are shown driving through the undisclosed base.

Bagheri is first seen walking over an Israeli flag painted on the floor before getting on the back of a military vehicle.

Addressing the facility’s personnel during the tour, he said: ‘Iran’s iron fist is far stronger than before. 10 times stronger than True Promise II’

‘All the [defensive] dimensions that are required for generating a [military] capability that is 10 times [stronger than] the one deployed during Operation True Promise II, has been created.’

Operation True Promise II refers to Iran’s missile retaliatory attack against Israel on April 13, 2024, in which 90 percent of missiles hit their intended targets.

Bagheri further noted that the pace at which the republic was developing its defensive might was ‘far faster than the pace of the enemies’, according to Press TV.

This comes as Donald Trump gave Iran’s supreme leader Ali Khamenei a two-month deadline for reaching a nuclear agreement, according to Axios.

If Iran rejects his outreach and refuses to negotiate, the chances of US. or Israeli military action against its nuclear sites would dramatically increase.

The nation boasts more than 3,000 ballistic missiles, the largest arsenal in the Middle East.

This does not include its burgeoning land-attack cruise missile force. Vast improvements have also been made over the past decade in the precision and accuracy of the missiles.

Many Iranian missiles are also inherently capable of carrying nuclear payloads, which has long been an international concern.

‘War plans’ shared by top Trump officials on an infiltrated Signal group chat have been published for the first time.

Ever since Atlantic editor Jeffrey Goldberg revealed he’d accidentally been included in a group chat where plans for air strikes against Houthi militias were discussed, Trump’s team has denied the information was ‘classified’.

‘Nobody was texting war plans’, Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth said on Tuesday.

President Donald Trump himself weighed in to say: ‘It wasn’t classified information.’

But the messages, published today by The Atlantic, tell a different story.

Opening the chat, national security adviser Mike Waltz said he was ‘establishing a principles group for coordination on Houthis’.

The Houthis are an Iran-backed militia in Yemen, from where they have been launching missiles against US ally Israel and western shipping through the Red Sea.

In the chat, Hegseth, Waltz, Vice President JD Vance, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, and director of national intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, discussed whether to move ahead with air strikes against the Houthis in order reopen shipping lanes. They agreed.

Then came almost minute-by-minute detail of US military operations on March 15.

‘Weather is favourable’, Hegseth said at 11.44am. ‘Just CONFIRMED w/ CENTCOM we are a GO for mission launch.’

In half an hour, he said, F-18 fighter jets would set off to launch a strike on a ‘target terrorist’ two hours after his message was sent.

By 2.15pm, more F-18s would have been dispatched, and drones would be ‘definitely’ dropping bombs, he told the group.

‘I will say a prayer for victory’, Vance replied.

Later, Waltz revealed the ‘first target’ – the Houthis’ ‘top missile guy’ – had walked into a building before it collapsed from the US military’s first strike.

But it may not have gone to plan had Goldberg been ‘someone hostile to American interests—or someone merely indiscreet, and with access to social media’, the journalist wrote in The Atlantic today.

Maybe, as Trump’s team says, the information revealed to Goldberg wasn’t classified’, but this could have meant ‘the Houthis would have had time to prepare for what was meant to be a surprise attack on their strongholds’.

Goldberg said: ‘The consequences for American pilots could have been catastrophic.’

Dr Steve Hewitt, an expert in American security and intelligence at the University of Birmingham, was stunned when he first read the Signal messages.

Up Next

Members of the chat celebrated upon receiving news the strikes were successful (Picture: The Atlantic)

He told Metro: ‘There was a mention of one target having entered a building where his girlfriend lived.

‘That speaks to maybe even human intelligence on the ground, which then potentially could put people at risk – US agents or wherever that information came from.

‘I imagine there’s a fair bit of anger in the intelligence community in the US, because obviously secrecy is of paramount importance.

‘I’m sure if these were junior officials who had done this, they would likely be facing disciplinary action or being fired, or even potentially being prosecuted, so to see senior people do this so casually, it’s really stunning.’

Waltz has sought to downplay the significance.

Responding to the publication of the messages, he wrote on social media: ‘No locations. No sources & methods. NO WAR PLANS. Foreign partners had already been notified that strikes were imminent. BOTTOM LINE: President Trump is protecting America and our interests.’

Hegseth’s response to JD Vance saying, ‘I just hate bailing Europe out again’ (Picture: The Atlantic)

The US National Security Council has confirmed the text chain ‘appears to be authentic’.

Senator Gary Peters, the most senior Democrat on the Senate security committee, said: ‘This is a flagrant failure and a huge breach of national security.

‘Our servicemembers deserve more from those in command. The carelessness of this level is simply unacceptable.’

Members of the group chat appear to be shifting the blame to Hegseth.

‘The Secretary of Defense is the original classification authority for determining whether something is classified’, CIA Director John Ratcliffe testified to the Senate Intelligence Committee.

‘As I’ve understood from media reports, the Secretary of Defense has said the information was not classified.’

Classified or not, it was only last month that the National Security Agencywarned employees about the ‘vulnerability’ of using Signal.

An internal bulletin said: ‘The use of Signal by common targets of surveillance and espionage activity has made the application a high value target to intercept sensitive information.’

While the messages sent on the platform are encrypted, the phones individuals use it on are susceptible to hacking.

Government-grade software like Pegasus can track keys, while phishing scams can give hackers access to devices.

Even a simple phone snatching could give access to the platform if the device is unlocked.

‘It’s just carelessness’, Hewitt told Metro. ‘I don’t know if you can call it a rookie mistake.’

Testifying before the Senate today, Gabbard said: ‘It was a mistake that a reporter was inadvertently added to a Signal chat with high-level national security principles having a policy discussion about imminent strikes against the Houthis and the effects of the strike.

‘National security adviser has taken full responsibility for this, and the National Security Council is conducting an in depth review, along with tech, technical experts working to determine how this reporter was inadvertently added to this chat.

‘The conversation was candid and sensitive, but as the president, national security adviser stated, no classified information was shared.

‘There were no sources, methods, locations or war plans that were shared. This was a standard update to the national security cabinet that was provided alongside updates that were given to foreign partners in the region.’

Why does Donald Trump want to buy Greenland so much he’s sending JD Vance there? https://metro.co.uk/2025/03/26/donald-trump-want-buy-greenland-much-sending-jd-vance-22795077/ https://metro.co.uk/2025/03/26/donald-trump-want-buy-greenland-much-sending-jd-vance-22795077/#respond Wed, 26 Mar 2025 11:17:28 +0000
UPDATE: Why does Trump want to buy Greenland? (ahead of Vance visit)

US Vice President JD Vance is visiting Greenland with his wife this week in the latest show of power since Donald Trump said he wants to buy the Arctic island.

Second lady Usha Vance was due to pop over with US officials to ‘celebrate Greenlandic culture and unity’ by seeing historical sites and a dogsled race.

That already drew the ire of politicians from this territory of the Kingdom of Denmark.

Outgoing Prime Minister Múte Egede called it ‘highly aggressive’, while his like successor called it ‘a lack of respect’.

But now Trump’s team are turning up the heat after JD Vance decided to tag along.

In a video posted to social media, he said: ‘I didn’t want [Usha] to have all that fun by herself, and so I’m going to join her.

‘I’m going to visit some of our guardians in the space force on the northwest coast of Greenland, and also just check out what’s going on with the security there of Greenland.’

Why does Donald Trump want Greenland?

Although the world’s largest island is home to just 57,000 – mostly indigenous Inuit – people, its natural resources and geographic position make it increasingly alluring for global powers.

‘I think Greenland is going to be something that maybe is in our future’, Trump recently said. He has refused to rule out using military force.

Trump has been eyeing up the island since 2019, but he’s not the first US President to want it.

The United States tried buying it in 1846, and again for the modern equivalent of £970million in 1946 when the Cold War was gathering pace.

Both times they were knocked back, but Greenland was seen has having such strategic importance in countering the Soviet Union, the US maintained a military presence there anyway.

With Denmark’s agreement, the US operate Thule Air Base, capable of sending American bombers across the Artic to strike the Soviet Union, and to detect missiles coming the other way.

There was also another base, a secret one, buried in a glacier 150 miles away.

Supposedly a research facility, Camp Century was actually supposed to house nuclear weapons able to launch through the ice sheet.

They were never put there in the end, and this outpost has since been abandoned.

While Thule still exists – albeit now called Pituffik Space Base – the fact Camp Century was lost 100 feet below the surface, until a team of Nasa scientists found it again last year, says something about changing international relations.

Even as the Cold War ebbed and flowed, maintaining nuclear weapons this far north wasn’t seen as vital.

But now the ice sheets are melting, making the surrounding waterways more navigable, and easing access to resources – uranium, iron, fossil fuels – hidden beneath.

Meanwhile tensions with Russia are higher than any time since the Cold War, and China – the USA’s new main rival – is seeking to invest in Greenland.

That might explain why Vance, ahead of his visit, said: ‘A lot of other countries have threatened Greenland, have threatened to use its territories and waterways to threaten the United States, to threaten Canada and of course to threaten the people of Greenland, so we’re going to check out how things are going there.

‘And I say that, speaking for President Trump, we want to reinvigorate the security of the people of Greenland because we think it’s important to protecting the security of the entire world.

‘Unfortunately, leaders in both American and in Denmark I think ignored Greenland for far too long.

‘That’s been bad for Greenland, it’s also been bad for the security of the entire world. We think we can take things in a different direction, so I’m going to go check it out.’

Who owns Greenland?

Trump might be insistent about buying Greenland for ‘national security’, saying in January: ‘I think Greenland will be worked out with us. I think we’re going to have it. And I think the people want to be with us.’

But the people of Greenland aren’t so keen. Roughly 85% oppose joining the USA, with nearly half seeing Trump’s interest as a threat.

‘What is the national security adviser doing in Greenland’, Prime Minister Múte Egede said in relation to US National Security Adviser Mike Waltz joining the Vance visit this week.

‘The only purpose is to demonstrate power over us. His mere presence in Greenland will no doubt fuel American belief in Trump’s mission – and the pressure will increase’

His party may have lost this month’s election, but his likely successor Jens-Frederik Nielsen agrees.

Nielsen said: ‘The fact that the Americans know very well that we are still in a negotiating situation and that the municipal elections have not yet concluded, they still capitalize on the moment to come to Greenland, once again, which shows a lack of respect for the Greenlandic population.’

Although Greenlanders are largely united in their opposition to US interference, they aren’t the only ones with a say.

Greenland has been ruled by Denmark – nearly 3,000km away – since several waves of colonisation in the 1700s.

Now a largely automous self-governing territory with representation in Denmark’s national parliament, Greenland has controlled its own internal affairs for decades.

But foreign relations are still overseen by Denmark, despite recent pushes for Greenlandic independence,

Denmark then, is likely to have some say in Greenland’s future. According to Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, that future appears not to be with the US.

‘Greenland is not for sale’, she said in a TV interview. ‘I want to make it very clear, that seen with the eyes of the Danish government, Greenland is for the Greenlandic people.

‘It is a very proud people, a language and culture, it is a people that is their own.’

Yes. Greenland is a part of NATO, because it is a part of Denmark – which is a NATO member.

This means if Trump were to ‘not rule out military action’, as he’s previously said, and take Greenland by force, it could spark a war.

Article Five of the NATO treaty says if a member state is attacked, it’s considered an attack on all members – who will then assist the attacked member in the fight.

Is there a US base in Greenland?

Yes. Previously known as Thule Air Base, the US-operated Pituffik Space Base is one of the most remote US military bases and the only one in Greenland.

With 150 Air Force and Space Force personnel permanently stationed here, it has radar capable of detecting ballistic missiles almost as soon as they have taken off.

Sat on the northwest of Greenland, where temperatures drop below -34°C in winter, the closest settlement is 70 miles away in Qaanaaq, home to no more than 650 people.

What is ‘Red White and Blueland’?

A Republican Congressman introduced legislation that would authorize Trump to enter into negotiations to acquire the autonomous territory of Denmark and rename it based on the US flag.

America is back and will soon be bigger than ever with the addition of Red, White, and Blueland,’ stated Rep Buddy Carter, 67, of Georgia.

‘President Trump has correctly identified the purchase of what is now Greenland as a national security priority, and we will proudly welcome its people to join the freest nation to ever exist when our Negotiator-in-Chief inks this monumental deal.’

The Red, White, and Blueland Act of 2025 directs the Secretary of the Interior to oversee that Greenland is renamed in federal documents and maps within 180 days.

‘Any reference in a law, map, regulation, document, paper, or other record of the United States to Greenland shall be deemed to be a reference to
13 ‘‘Red, White, and Blueland’’.

The bill must first be studied by a committee before it can go for a vote in the House. It would then go to the Senate.

It is being considered by lawmakers even as Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has repeatedly said that the Arctic island is ‘not for sale’.

Vladimir Putin is flexing his muscles in the Sea of Japan just hours after setting conditions for a Black Sea ceasefire with Ukraine.

The drill came only a few hours after Russia set a number of conditions before going ahead with a ceasefire in the Black Sea, amid ongoing tumultuous talks involving the US to try and bring about a longer-term ceasefire.

But in case the world forgot about Russia’s military might, its Ministry of Defence said missiles fired from the Ufa diesel-electric submarine hit its target in the Khabarovsk region, as well as a surface target in the Sea of Japan.

Admiral Alexander Moiseyev, Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy, praised the submarine’s crew for the success of the missile launch.

Yesterday’s peace talks in Saudi Arabia, brokered by the White House, concluded when Russia agreed to ‘ensure safe navigation, eliminate the use of force, and prevent the use of commercial vessels for military purposes in the Black Sea.’

Vladimir Putin staged war games in a warning to the West as his Pacific Fleet submarine Ufa launched Kalibr cruise missiles during exercises in the Sea of Japan.

Ukraine’s defence minister Rustem Umerov said Ukraine has also agreed to the ceasefire.

However, among other demands Putin ordered for sanctions to be lifted on Rosselkhozbank and other banks involved in food trade, trade finance operations, and food and fertiliser exporters.

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky thanked the White House for its help in brokering the deal, but said Russia must now ‘prove’ it is ready to end the war.

He added: ‘How Russia behaves in the coming days will show a lot, if not everything.

‘If there are air alerts again, if there is military activity in the Black Sea again, if there are Russian manipulations and threats again, then new measures will have to be taken – specifically against Moscow.

‘Diplomacy must work. We, on the Ukrainian side, are doing everything we can to achieve this.

‘I want to thank everyone who is helping us. Thank you to America for the fact that our teams are working constructively and effectively.

‘We need results from Russia. We don’t believe them.

‘The world really doesn’t believe Russia. And they must prove that they are ready to end the war and are ready not to lie to the world, not to lie to Trump, not to lie to America.’

Meanwhile US president Donald Trump, who had previously claimed he could end the Russia-Ukraine war in one day, admitted that Putin could be trying to delay a ceasefire.

He told Newsmax: ‘I think that Russia wants to see an end to it, but it could be they’re dragging their feet. I’ve done it over the years.

‘I think Russia would like to see it end and I think Zelensky would like to see it end, at this point.’

The agreement is a sharp turn from earlier this week when Vladimir Putin tried to sink a container ship reportedly carrying a cargo of weapons destined for Ukraine.

Two Iskander-M ballistic missiles were unleashed on a Black Sea port in the southern city of Odesa where the vessel had arrived after making a stop in Turkey.

Facilities at the three Black Sea ports around the city have been frequent Russian targets in the three-year-long war.

A Democratic lawmaker suggested that President Donald Trump consider deporting his wife, First Lady Melania Trump, during a march protesting his immigration and other policies.

Rep Maxine Waters of California suddenly brought up Melania while ranting against cuts by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

‘When he talks about birthright, and he’s going to undo the fact that the Constitution allows those who are born here, even if the parents are undocumented, they have a right to stay in America,’ said Waters of the president.

‘If he wants to start looking so closely to find those who were born here and their parents were undocumented, maybe he ought to first look at Melania.’

As the crowd at a Los Angeles rally cheered, Waters continued: ‘We don’t know whether or not her parents were documented. And maybe we better just take a look.’

The Congresswoman’s remarks from Saturday went viral among conservatives and continued to be a trending topic on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday.

A parody account for Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan, wrote: ‘Maxine Waters is now calling for Melania Trump, an American citizen, to be deported for standing against her! Is anyone really surprised? Democrats are anti American POS traitors.’

Another X user said about liberals, ‘They can’t fix the economy. They can’t stop crime. So Maxine Waters wants to deport Melania? That’s where we’re at now.

‘Crazy ghetto-a** trash!’ a user remarked.

The first lady, who is accustomed to keeping a low profile but has made numerous official appearances over the past two months, did not immediately comment publicly or on X on Waters’ suggestion.

Melania was born in present-day Slovenia and moved to the US to pursue her modeling career. She became a naturalized US citizen in 2006 after marrying Donald, according to her government biography. Once she was granted American citizenship, Melania sponsored her parents for green cards and their citizenship.

Waters over the weekend bashed the president’s executive order signed on the first day of his second term banning birthright citizenship. The order attempts to cut out birthright citizenship to people born to illegal immigrant parents, and only give it to those born to parents in the US legally or on temporary non-immigrant visas.

The Democratic lawmaker spoke before hundreds who protested moves to downsize the federal government by Elon Musk’s DOGE, and marched to the VA hospital on Wilshire Boulevard.

‘We are here because we are not going to let Trump, we’re not going to let Elon Musk, his co-president, or anybody else take the United States Constitution down,’ stated Waters.

Heart singer Nancy Wilson has revealed that it is ‘more embarrassing’ to be an American now amid Donald Trump’s second presidency.

The musician, 71, has been in the spotlight for decades, finding her passion for music as a teenager before joining her sister, Ann Wilson, in the rock band.

They have never been afraid to make her feelings known about politics and the state of the world in that time, and famously released Crazy On You in 1975 in response to the Vietnam War.

In a new interview, she explained that the track, as well as their wider discography, is even more relevant today following Trump’s second term in office.

‘We were kind of embarrassed at that time to call ourselves American because of the dirty politics of the Vietnam War,’ she recently told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

‘To be as subtle as possible, it’s more embarrassing now.’

Touching on their 1977 song, Barracuda – which she described as a track about ‘a real sleazeball with a satin jacket’ – the guitarist declared that it ‘is even more relevant in the salacious billionaire culture with the grab-them-by-the-p***y mentality.

‘These songs will be there long after we are gone.’

‘I think for women in the culture the pendulum will come back again, and there’ll be another renaissance in the arts to push back against the oppression of the cranky old rich white guys,’ Nancy added.

‘I hope I am alive to see that next revolution.’

Nancy’s comments come as she is set to head back out on the road with her older sister, Ann, and their Heart bandmates – months after they were forced to postpone their tour.

Last summer, the musicians, who first found fame in the 70s, announced that they would be pushing back a string of performances after Ann was diagnosed with cancer, and took time to undergo treatment.

‘Dear friends, I recently underwent an operation to remove something that, as it turns out, was cancerous,’ she said in a statement shared on Instagram in July.

‘The operation was successful & I’m feeling great but my doctors are now advising me to undergo a course of preventative chemotherapy & I’ve decided to do it.

‘To the ticket buyers, I really do wish we could do these gigs. Please know that I absolutely plan to be back on stage in 2025. My team is getting those details sorted & we’ll let you know the plan as soon as we can.

‘Thank you for all the support. This is merely a pause. I’ve much more to sing.’

She concluded: ‘Respectfully, this is the last public statement I’d like to make on the matter.’

After taking time away, the rockers got back on the road to continue their tour across the US.

Their next gig comes on March 26 in Milwaukee, with stops lined up in Charleston, Ottawa, Toronto, Boston, New York, St Louis and Jacksonville, before ending their run of dates in Allentown on August 27.

Transgender people could be detained at the US border if their documents are marked a certain way (Picture: Getty/Metro)

European countries are lining up to warn their transgender citizens about travel to the USA amid fears of ‘indefinite detention’ at the border.

On his first day in office, President Donald Trump declared the US would only recognise two genders, the firing shot in an assault on LGBT+ rights in the US, which has included scrapping a directive preventing discrimination, and a ban on transgender people serving in the military.

This may create a stumbling block for transgender and non-binary travellers, whose visas, passports and other documents are now expected to list their ‘sex at birth’.

People whose legal gender differs from that, or who have an ‘X’ mark instead of ‘M’ or ‘F’, there is a fear they could be difficulty if they try to enter the US.

‘Confiscation of your passport and indefinite detention in an ICE facility is a real possibility’,TransActual director jane fae told Metro.

Among a series of people detained at the US border this month is a French scientist denied entry after immigration officials found messages critical of Trump’s policies on his phone.

It’s prompted numerous countries in Europe, including France, Ireland and Germany, to warn their transgender citizens about travel to the US.

A spokesperson for LGBT+ rights charity Stonewall Spokesperson told Metro: ‘LGBTQ+ people across the world are facing uncertain and turbulent times.

‘It is deeply troubling that one of the US President’s first actions upon taking office was to deny the existence of trans, non-binary and intersex people – a stance with alarming historical parallels.

‘As the US and other countries adopt regressive and harmful policies that threaten to roll back rights, it is important that governments adapt advice for their LGBTQ+ citizens so they can make informed decisions about travel and keep as safe as possible when they choose to do so.’

An update to the website of Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs on Monday said: ‘ESTA and visa application forms to the US require travellers to declare their sex.

‘The US authorities have indicated that this should reflect the traveller’s biological sex at birth.

‘Travellers who have an “X” marker on their passport or whose sex on their passport differs from sex assigned at birth should contact the Embassy of the United States of America in Dublin for further details on specific entry requirements.’

Some countries like the UK, and the USA’s Nato partner Canada, haven’t issued US-specific guidance for transgender citizens, which a transgender rights charity has called a ‘dereliction of duty’.

However, they do offer general guidance warning transgender people they could face issues with travel documents in countries where transgender people are not recognised.

This is a marked contrast with the specific advice issued by the UK in 2016 when North Carolina passed a bill banning transgender people from using bathrooms aligned with their gender identity, and Mississippi introduced a law allowing anti-LGBT+ discrimination.

TransActual director jane fae said: ‘Back in 2016, when the risks to travellers were less than today, the government, through its regular Foreign & Commonwealth Office briefs, issued a warning to LGBTQ+ travellers to North Carolina and Mississipi that was considerably more direct than anything government is doing today.

‘This advice stayed up until some point in 2017, when we were looking to appease an incoming Trump administration, and it was taken down.

‘Today, the risks to LGBTQ+ travellers are significantly greater. Confiscation of your passport and indefinite detention in an ICE facility is a real possibility.

‘Yet government is content to issue an anaemic warning that does not touch the seriousness of the situation.

‘They are putting lives at risk. In addition, by not issuing an official warning, those who are aware of the dangers and now wish to cancel their holiday bookings cannot obtain refunds.

‘This is dereliction of duty. It demonstrates yet again that government’s much touted ‘reset’ of relations with the LGBTQ+ community is just so much hollow rhetoric. If they truly want a reset, they need to do much better.’

British woman Rebecca Burke, 28, spent 19 days in detention for falling foul of border security while trying to leave the USA after working in return for accommodation, a violation of her visa.

This crackdown appears not to be limited to those breaking immigration rules, however.

Mahmoud Khalil, a Palestinian student at New York’s Columbia University, was detained by immigration enforcement agents who took him from his home on campus to a detention facility in Louisiana.

Rosie O’Donnell has made headlines following her recent comments on her ongoing battle with Donald Trump, sparking questions over how their long-running feud began.

Earlier this month, the comedian, 62, confirmed that she had started a new life in Ireland, joining a string of famous faces who had left the US following the controversial politician’s second Presidency.

Touching on her decision to flee, she declared that the 78-year-old ‘has had it out for her’ for years – stemming from remarks she made on the View nearly two decades ago.

Since that fateful episode aired, they have continued to trade barbs on social media, with the US leader deeming her ‘a real loser’ and ‘obnoxious’.

Here is a rundown of where their drama started, and what led to the TV favorite leaving America.

How Rosie O’Donnell’s feud with Donald Trump began

O’Donnell made her feelings about Trump very clear during a discussion about a controversial Miss USA winner on the View in 2006, and didn’t hold back about the then-TV star, who owned the pageant at the time.

After winner Tara Conner was accused of doing drugs and drinking underage, he held a press conference to insist that she should be ‘given a second chance’, a stance that the host found ‘annoying’.

‘He annoys me on a multitude of levels,’ she fumed to her fellow panelist. ‘He’s the moral authority – left the first wife, had an affair, left the second wife, had an affair, had kids both times, but he’s the moral compass for 20-year-olds in America.

‘Donald, sit and spin, my friend. I don’t enjoy him.’

O’Donnell then called out his reputation as a self-made man’ and the financial help he allegedly received from his father.

‘He’s going to sue me but he’ll be bankrupt by that time, so I won’t have to worry,’ she said to gasps from her colleagues.

‘I think this man is like one of those snake-oil salesmen on Little House On The Prairie…

‘That’s my opinion, I don’t enjoy him.’

What has Donald Trump said about Rosie O’Donnell?

According to People Magazine, Trump slammed her words and claimed that his dad ‘never gave [him] tons of money’, branding her ‘terrible’, insisting her statements were ‘false’.

Threatening legal action, he added: ‘Rosie will rue the words she said. I’ll most likely sue her for making those false statements — and it’ll be fun. Rosie’s a loser. A real loser.’

The New York Times reports that he later called her ‘disgusting’ and ‘a slob’ with ‘a fat, ugly face’ on Entertainment Tonight, describing her as a ‘very unattractive person, both inside and out’.

Their battle has raged on over the years, leading to Trump responding to O’Donnell’s 2011 engagement news with a less-than-congratulatory message on Twitter.

‘I feel sorry for Rosie ‘s new partner in love whose parents are devastated at the thought of their daughter being with @Rosie –a true loser,’ he posted.

Two years later, he replied to a Twitter user, insisting that their spat ‘will never end’.

In 2014, he took aim at her once again, tweeting: ‘Rosie is crude, rude, obnoxious and dumb – other than that I like her very much!’

That same year, the SMILF actress said that their public sparring had led to the ‘most bullying’ that she had experienced in her life.

Unpacking their fraught history in a chat with People Magazine, she remarked: ‘Probably the Trump stuff was the most bullying I ever experienced in my life, including as a child.

‘It was national, and it was sanctioned societally. Whether I deserved it is up to your own interpretation.’

This did little to stop Trump, as he continued to bash O’Donnell publicly during his first Presidential campaign.

‘Somebody who has been very vicious to me, Rosie O’Donnell,’ he announced during a debate with Hillary Clinton in 2016, via the New York Times.

‘I said very tough things to her, and I think everybody would agree that she deserves it and nobody feels sorry for her.’

Hitting back in a now-deleted Twitter post, O’Donnell branded him an ‘orange anus’.

Following his first election, she spoke candidly to W Magazine about their tumultuous history, and questioned whether she could ‘live through’ his reign.

‘Unbeknownst to me, for reasons I can’t really still figure out, he was allowed with impunity to brutally assault me and my character for a decade,’ she said in 2017.

‘No one – not the National Organization For Women, not Gloria Steinem, no one – stood up and said, “What the hell are you doing?” It was laughed about.

‘When it was only me in that arena, it was a very lonely, isolated and depressing place to be. Even though [people say], “Oh you started it,” well I actually told the truth about him on a show where my job was to talk about pop culture.

‘I seriously worry whether I personally will be able to live through [his presidency] and whether the nation will be able to live through it and survive. It’s a terrifying concept, on the brink of nuclear war with a madman in charge.’

Why did Rosie O’Donnell leave America?

Up Next

O’Donnell fled the US on January 15 – shortly before Trump’s second inauguration – along with her youngest child, Clay. Her other kids, Parker, Blake, Chelsea and Vivienne are yet to join them.

She announced that they would consider returning to America when ‘it is safe for all citizens to have equal rights there’.

Taking to TikTok, the star raved about her new life, and shed light on her long-running issues with the former Apprentice host, stemming from her time hosting the View.

‘When I told the truth about him, he went nuts,’ she told followers. ‘It’s been 17 or 18 years of it already and I’m sick of it.

‘I didn’t want to live with it when he was back in office. I knew it would tax me emotionally to have to do that. I’m very happy we made the decision we made.

‘I’m really hopeful the Americans who voted for him will see just how cruel he is and will do something to stop him. There has to be smarter people than me in the world who are in positions of power who can affect change.’

Appearing on the Late Late Show just a few days ago, O’Donnell discussed how she has settled into her new way of life.

‘The President of the United States has it out for me and has for 20 years, when I told the truth about him on a program called The View – where it was my job to talk about pop culture, politics…,’ she told the host.

Trump defended Mike Waltz, a member of the group chat (Picture: Getty)

The journalist who was added to a group chat which divulged US war plans in Yemen said he is considering whether or not to release the full messages.

Editor in Chief of The Atlantic, Jeffrey Goldberg, told the Bulwark Podcast today: ‘My colleagues and I and the people who are giving us advice on this have some interesting conversations to have about this.

‘But just because they’re irresponsible with material, doesn’t mean that I’m going to be irresponsible,’ he added.

Earlier today, President Donald Trump defended a key member of his cabinet after texts about military strikes in Yemen were leaked in a group chat which included the editor-in-chief of a major magazine.

Speaking to NBC, Trump said: ‘Michael Waltz has learned a lesson, and he’s a good man,’ before adding, ‘It’s the only glitch in two months, and it turned out not to be a serious one.’

Mr Trump initially told reporters he was not aware that the highly sensitive information had been shared, more than two hours after it was reported. He later appeared to joke about the breach.

It’s a ‘need-to-know’ type conversation, limited to Vice President JD Vance, Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, and Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard.

Encrypted messaging platform Signal should be a relatively secure place for the top ranks of Donald Trump’s administration to share details of the targets and weapons in a planned bombing campaign against the Houthis.

And, it turns out, editor-in-chief of The Atlantic magazine, Jeffrey Goldberg – or, as Hegseth calls him, a deceitful and highly discredited so-called journalist who has made a profession of peddling hoaxes’.

But this leaking of potentially classified ‘war plans’ is no hoax. According to the National Security Council, the text chain ‘appears to be authentic’.

Senator Gary Peters, the most senior Democrat on the Senate security committee, said: ‘This is a flagrant failure and a huge breach of national security.

‘Our servicemembers deserve more from those in command. The carelessness of this level is simply unacceptable.’

Up Next

President Trump appears not to care, branding The Atlantic ‘not much of a magazine’ and telling reporters: ‘I know nothing about it.’

On his Truth Social platform, he shared an X post by his ally, tech billionaire Elon Musk, saying: ‘Best place to hide a dead body is page 2 of The Atlantic Magazine, because no one ever goes there.’

Messages had detailed plans for military strikes against the Iran-backed Houthi militias who have launched missile attacks from Yemen against Israel and Red Sea shipping, in solidarity with the Palestinians in Gaza.

The US has conducted air strikes against the Houthis since the militant group began targeting commercial and military vessels in the Red Sea in November 2023.

Hegseth insists: ‘Nobody was texting war plans.’

UPDATE: Donald Trump story
Some of the messages exchanged in the Signal group chat (not in sequence) (Picture: x/whatsapp)

Even Goldberg was sceptical, saying he ‘could not believe that the national-security leadership of the United States would communicate on Signal about imminent war plans’.

But just two hours after Goldberg received the details of the attack on March 15, the US began launching a series of air strikes against Houthi targets in Yemen.

It was not immediately clear if the specifics of the military operation were classified, but they often are and at the least are kept secure to protect service members and operational security.

The National Security Council said in a statement that it was looking into how a journalist’s number was added to the chain in the Signal group chat, which included Tulsi Gabbard, Mr Trump’s director of national intelligence, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Goldberg said he received the Signal invitation from Mike Waltz, Trump’s national security adviser, who was also in the group chat.

In a statement late on Monday, White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said the president still has the ‘utmost confidence’ in Waltz and the national security team.

Trump told reporters he was not aware of the apparent breach in protocol: ‘I know nothing about it,’ he said, adding that The Atlantic was ‘not much of a magazine’.

Government officials have used Signal for organisational correspondence, but it is not classified and can be hacked.

Privacy and tech experts say the popular end-to-end encrypted messaging and voice call app is more secure than conventional texting.

Messages in the 'Houthi PC small group' chat

‘PC’ stands for principals committee – or senior members of national intelligence.

In one message, Pete Hegseth replied to JD Vance writing:

‘VP: I fully share your loathing of European free-loading. It’s PATHETIC.

‘But Mike is correct, we are the only ones on the planet (on our side of the ledger) who can do this. Nobody else even close. Question is timing.

‘I feel like now is as good a time as any, given POTUS directive to reopen shipping lanes. I think we should go; but POTUS still retains 24 hours of decision space.’

A group member named ‘SM’ then replied:

‘As I heard it, the president was clear: green light, but we soon make clear to Egypt and Europe what we expect in return. We also need to figure out how to enforce such a requirement.

EG, if Europe doesn’t remunerate, then what? If the US successfully restores freedom of navigation at great cost there needs to be some further economic gain extracted in return.

US strikes into Yemen escalated last week when these messages were sent.

The sharing of sensitive information comes as Defence Secretary Hegseth’s office has just announced a crackdown on leaks of sensitive information.

The breach in protocol was swiftly condemned by Democratic legislators.

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer called for a full investigation, saying: ‘This is one of the most stunning breaches of military intelligence I have read about in a very, very long time.’

The handling of national defence information is strictly governed by law under the century-old Espionage Act.

The act includes provisions that make it a crime to remove such information from its ‘proper place of custody’ even through an act of gross negligence.

The Justice Department in 2015 and 2016 investigated whether former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton broke the law by communicating classified information with her aides on a private email server she set up.

The FBI ultimately recommended against charges, but none were brought.

In the Biden administration, some officials were given permission to download Signal on their White House-issued phones but were instructed to use the app sparingly, according to a former national security official who served in the Democratic administration.

Second Lady Usha Vance will spearhead a US delegation heading to Greenland later this week – the self-governing, mineral-rich territory of Denmark that Donald Trump has suggested the US should take over.

Mrs Vance is leaving Thursday for Greenland, alongside one of her three children, as part of a US delegation set to ‘visit historical sites, learn about Greenlandic heritage, and attend Greenland’s national dogsled race’.

The race, called Avannaata Qimussersu, features around 37 mushers and 444 dogs.

Mrs Vance’s office described the race as a ‘remarkable display of speed, skill, and teamwork’, adding they were excited to ‘celebrate Greenlandic culture and unity’.

The visit comes after Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr, visited the island in January after the President remarked that the US should acquire Greenland ‘for purposes of National security and Freedom’.

Greenland is also rich in mineral resources that have not been tapped including coal, copper, diamonds, iron ore, oil and zinc.

Only a small fraction of the island has been explored due to the ice and glaciers, but they are melting which could make the resources more easily accessible. Ice loss has also opened more shopping routes to cut nautical travel in the summer of the Northern Hemisphere.

Trump had mused during his first term about buying the world’s largest island, even as Denmark, a Nato ally, insisted it was not for sale.

Since returning to the White House, Trump has repeatedly said that the US will come to control Greenland while insisting he supports the idea for strategic national security reasons – not with an eye toward American expansionism.

The US already has a military base in Greenland, but during a recent Oval Office meeting with Nato secretary general Mark Rutte, Trump said ‘Denmark’s very far away’ from Greenland.

He also questioned whether that country still had a right to claim the world’s largest island as part of its kingdom.

Beyond his focus on Greenland, Mr Trump has refused to rule out military intervention in Panama to retake that country’s canal, saying that Canada should be America’s 51st state.

He also suggested that US interests could assume control of the war-torn Gaza Strip from Israel and redevelop it as a “Riviera”-like seaside resort.

Elon Musk donned a new MAGA hat with the greatest praising message for President Donald Trump yet to a Cabinet meeting.

The head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) wore a red baseball cap with ‘Trump Was Right About Everything!’ in all-capital white lettering and ’45-47′ stitched on the side.

Musk was the only attendee at the Cabinet meeting on Monday afternoon to sport the hat with the big statement.

He also wore a black suit jacket over a black shirt, similar to his attire at a Cabinet meeting last month when he wore a ‘tech support’ shirt under a suit jacket and a dark MAGA hat.

During the meeting, Trump said, ‘Elon’s a patriot, we want to thank you very much for the job you’re doing, thank you very much.’

The Tesla CEO and X (formerly Twitter) owner remarked: ‘Just trying to the right thing for the American taxpayer and for the American people.

State Secretary Marco Rubio and US Attorney General Pam Bondi, who flanked Trump at the table, and other members clapped for the tech billionaire.

‘Just a thank you to the DOGE team who are likely going to get threats and being accosted. A lot of them are just kids, you know, they’re just trying to help out. And they’re very talented, they could get jobs and earn millions of dollars a year. Instead, they come here to earn peanuts and get death threats, so thanks to the DOGE team.’

Cabinet members clapped for him again.

Musk also brought up a ‘good case of fraud’ of the Small Business Administration handing out $330million worth of loans to people under age 11.

‘Very precocious baby we’re talking about here,’ he said with a laugh.

Musk was the only one at the table without a title on his name card.

He appeared at the meeting with Trump’s top advisers hours after a federal judge blocked DOGE from accessing Americans’ public data with the Treasury Department, Education Department and the Office of Personnel Management.

US District Judge Deborah Boardman found that the Trump administration likely violated federal law by giving DOGE ‘seemingly unfettered access’ to records from those departments. She stated that the government did not sufficiently explain why it needed to access ‘millions of records’ and that the administration could carry out its duties without viewing them.

‘They trusted the federal government to safeguard their information. That public trust likely has been breached,’ wrote Boardman wrote.

The White House has been questioned about Musk’s casual attire in the West Wing, particularly in light of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky receiving criticism for not wearing an suit during his meeting with Trump in the Oval Office.

Rosie O’Donnell has opened up about her decision to leave the US, claiming President Donald Trump has ‘had it out for her’ for the last 20 years.

Earlier this month, the iconic comedian confirmed that she had swapped life in America for Ireland on January 15, along with her 12-year-old child, who goes by Clay.

Sharing the news on TikTok, the 62-year-old raved about the ‘loving, welcoming’ reception she had been met with in her new home.

Appearing on the Late Late Show, the star – who was one of many fleeing the United States – shed light on her decision to relocate, and how she has settled into her new way of life.

‘Settling in great, the people have been unbelievably kind, loving, supportive and so different than Americans when they recognize you,’ she told host Patrick Kielty.

‘It’s so polite, so sweet and it’s so non-invasive. It’s beautiful.’

A clip then played of President Trump sitting down with Ireland’s Taoiseach, Micheál Martin, during his St Patrick’s Day visit to the White House last week, where the politician made a dig at Rosie’s move.

‘Very, very surreal,’ the SMILF actress said of the footage. ‘He’s been doing it for two decades and I’m still not used to it every time he does.

‘I felt very troubled that they put the Taoiseach in that position, and didn’t treat him with the respect that a leader of that kind deserves when they’re visiting The White House.

‘I wrote the Taoiseach with a little note [of] apology to his email and got a note back that they had received it, and thanked me.

‘But I just wanted him to know the history and what happened, and why he seems to be out to get me in ways that are startling to most.’

Reflecting on her new surroundings in a recent TikTok video, the star raved about the changes she had already seen personally.

‘I’m telling you, I feel healthier. I’m sleeping better without the stress and anxiety about what was happening politically in the US,’ she told viewers at the time.

Donald Trump Jr. is said to be ‘cool’ with his ex-wife Vanessa dating golf star Tiger Woods.

There have been rumours the pair were an item and now Woods has confirmed the relationship by posting two photos of them together on social media with the caption ‘Love is in the air’.

It’s believed Woods, 49, and Vanessa, 47, who both live in Florida, have been together since November last year.

Vanessa was married to Trump Jr for 12 years, from 2005 to 2018. They have five children together, Kai, Donald III, Tristan, Spencer and Chloe.

In one of the photos Woods posted on X and Instagram, the two are lying in a hammock, with Vanessa’s arm around the golf champion.

Alongside the pictures he wrote: ‘Love is in the air and life is better with you by my side! We look forward to our journey through life together.’

He added: ‘At this time we would appreciate privacy for all those close to our hearts.’

Trump Jr – who may run to succeed his father in 2028 – hasn’t yet spoken publicly about his ex’s new relationship but a source told People he was ‘cool’ with it.

But he is now dating West Palm Beach socialite Bettina Anderson.

Trump Jr. and Vanessa’s 17-year-old daughter Kai goes to the same school as Woods’ children Charlie, 16, and Sam, 17.

Kai and Charlie are both aspiring golfers, with hopes of turning professional.

Woods, meanwhile, has played golf with Trump senior on a number of occasions.

Vanessa and Trump Jr. first met at a fashion show in 2006, according to The New York Times.

Vanessa had a colourful dating life before him. Her first serious relationship was said to be with Latin Kings gangster Valentin Rivera, the MailOnline reports.

The pair met in elementary school and were apparently a couple for five years, when Vanessa was a teenager.

They broke up when Rivera served a 16-month stint in prison. He has claimed she had an affair with Leonardo DiCaprio after meeting him in a club.

Rivera was later jailed for negligent homicide after accidentally shooting a friend dead.

It’s believed Vanessa then went on to date Saudi prince Khalid bin Bandar bin Sultan Al Saud for three years between 1998 and 2001, before they broke up shortly after 9/11.

The prince left the US after the terrorist attack with reports claiming his Saudi ambassador father Bandar bin sultan Al Saud had indirect ties to Al Qaeda, writes CNN.

A source told Page Six: ‘Bandar treated her as if she was his queen. It was the complete opposite from Don Jr. They were together 24/7. They were a real couple.’

However, another source said their relationship wasn’t that serious and there were no plans to marry.

The prince later married British aristocrat Lucy Caroline Cuthbert, the niece of the Duke of Northumberland.
