Luckily for us all, Gogglebox recently returned to our screens, with a brand new episode airing every Friday.
Fan-favourite couples including Giles and Mary, Dave and Shirley and Jenny and Lee are back to talk about the latest and greatest on TV.
Although we all wish being a Goggleboxer was a full-time job that we could all apply to, it’s actually only a part-time venture and almost all of the cast members have other day jobs.
So, what do Giles and Mary do for work, when they aren’t watching the telly? Here’s what we know.
What do Giles and Mary do for a living?
Married couple Giles Wood and Mary Killen joined the show in 2015 and have cemented their place in the hearts of viewers ever since.
The quirky couple is known for their odd sayings, quirky observations, and calling each other ‘nutty.’
When not commenting on the week’s TV, Mary is an author and columnist, including having a column for The Spectator.
Mary has written about finding fame on the show for the publication.
In her column, she writes: ‘Thanks to Stephen Fry, I had never wanted to be on television. Around the time Fry made the transition from print to screen, and hence real fame, he wrote a piece lamenting the irreversible step he had taken.’
Luckily, being a Gogglebox favourite didn’t leave her feeling the same way, as she adds: ‘The public’s reaction is entirely benign. People approach me, their faces wreathed in smiles. “You’re Mary from Gogglebox, aren’t you? I just want to say — your husband makes us laugh”.’
Mary has also written five books, including How the Queen Can Make You Happy in 2012 and How to Live With Your Husband in 1997.

Meanwhile, Mary’s husband Giles is an artist, specialising in oil paintings.
On the subject of his artistic style, his website reads: ‘Eschewing the modernist aesthetic to pare away detail to the logical conclusion of the blank canvas, Wood enjoys painting the clutter of peoples’ lives and popular demand has recently led him away from his trademark landscapes to specialise in interiors.’
When it comes to his art, Giles himself has said: ‘I like the contemplative aspect — sitting for several days in a room, watching the light change. There are as many changes as with a landscape. I always work in oils as they give more depth.
‘The finished painting should offer an insight into the painter as well as the subject.’
Much of his work is available to buy – anyone interested in making a purchase just needs to email askmarykillen@gmail.com.

What did Mary do when she was younger?
Before finding her forte as a writer – and as an armchair critic of TV for Gogglebox –Mary reportedly worked as a model, meeting Giles when he was studying at Wimbledon Art School.
In 2020, photos of a glamorous 1970s model were circulated which many shared – including Zoe Ball – believing it to be Mary.
A spokesperson for Gogglebox commented: ‘We have checked with Mary and although hugely flattered, it is not her. It is a model called Susan Shaw.’
Do Giles and Mary have children?
It is understood Giles and Mary have two grown-up daughters together who don’t live with their parents.

On May 1, a Gogglebox fan page shared an old image of Giles and Mary with their children.
It has been widely reported that one of their daughters was set to appear alongside Giles on the Channel 4 show instead of Mary – but backed out at the last minute.
Fortunately, Mary stepped in, and so fans are treated to an hour of the bubbly couple every Friday night.
