epa11945174 Paul Maust sorts eggs after they are washed at Maust's California Poultry in Chino, California, USA, 06 March 2025. An ongoing bird flu outbreak has significantly reduced the supply of egg-laying hens, which has caused a shortage of eggs and driving prices up considerably according to the US Department of Agriculture. Maust's California Poultry, which houses around 15,000 chickens, has not yet been hit with the avian flu, but has faced a significant rise in operational costs in recent months due to the outbreak and thus has had to raise the price of eggs they have on sale.
