Maisie Smith and Max George have bewildered fans by appearing to announce they are expecting a child.

The Wanted singer, 34, and actress, 21, met on Strictly Come Dancing and have since been inseparable, jetting off on numerous holidays and packing on the PDA.

Max and Maisie have previously sparked theories that they are engaged – speculation that went nowhere – and the couple caused confusion this week as they announced Maisie was pregnant.

However not everything was as it seemed.

The couple took to Instagram on Monday where they shared a snap of Maisie seemingly cradling a pregnancy bump while Max looked on in awe, captioning it: ‘We’ve got some really exciting news.’

But in the next picture, a heart emoji over Maisie’s ‘bump’ was replaced with the words: ‘I just had the best 5 course meal of my life.’

Max and Maisie’s apparent joke caused confusion and some hurt among fans, with plenty taking to social media to air their opinion over the ‘thoughtless’ joke.

One person tagged both Max and Maisie on Twitter and said they ‘don’t think this is something either of you should be joking about,’ while another fan said they were currently experiencing pregnancy loss and found it difficult to see the couple ‘joke about [being] pregnant.’

‘Pregnancy jokes are not and never will be amusing,’ another wrote, while one asked exasperatedly: ‘What on earth is Maisie Smith’s Instagram story.’

And as one person put it: ‘Pregnancy jokes are not, and never will be funny. You’ve hurt many people, fans, with those thoughtless stories tonight. People who have lost children. People who cannot conceive for whatever reason. Please do better.’

It comes after supermodel Heidi Klum was criticised for wearing a prosthetic bump and acting as though she was expecting a child as an April Fool’s prank, with fans labeling it ‘tacky’ and hurtful.

Max and Maisie confirmed their romance last year, and have previously been the centre of controversy over their 13-year-age gap, which Maisie says ‘never enters my mind.’

Max added: ‘It never enters my mind. Maisie has already done so many things that I’m in awe of – I look up to her.’
