I hope my parents aren’t reading this, but I used to get deeply trolleyed on absinthe during my year abroad in Spain.

My friends and I would basically take over a bar called ‘La Chupiteria’, dedicated to shots, and order a round of ‘absentas’ to kick off the evening. Our ritual involved shooting a shot of the green fairy, white-knuckling the bar, placing our heads between our knees in the brace position until we’d recovered. Then, doing it all over again.

But, enough about my wayward youth. I’ve grown up since then and now have an entirely new and mature relationship with absinthe, after many years of estrangement. Just in time for the renaissance of the drink, might I add.

Back in the day, and by that I mean mid-19^th century Belle Epoque, absinthe was the spirit of choice amongst Bohemian Paris, from Baudelaire, Oscar Wilde to Toulouse Lautrec. Hemmingway drank it with Champagne – a cocktail known as Death in the Afternoon – while Vincent cut off his ear while he was on the stuff. So you can see why it was banned in France for the last 100 years.

What is absinthe?

It’s a green-hued spirit created in Switzerland in 1700, made from grand wormwood, anise, fennel and a bunch of other, undisclosed herbs. Like so many of these lethally strong, but delicious ‘drinktures’, they started out as medicinal elixirs to cure stomach ailments. Similar story for Chartreuse.

Absinthe’s popularity grew in Paris to the point where 5pm was called ‘l’heur verte’, which means ‘the green hour’. Just as quickly, it faced the wrath of cancel culture from a ‘moral panic’ at the end of the century France, blamed for the ‘social ills’ of the country and banned there until 2011. Not only there, but Switzerland, France, Belgium, Netherlands and the United States.

Why was it banished though? Because wormwood contains a neurotoxin called thujone, but then, so does sage. In excess, thujone has been linked to fits, hallucinations and psychosis, and this is what was fixated on. The powers that be separated it from alcoholism, giving it the name ‘absinthism’, even linking it to notoriously gruesome crimes.

Nowadays, the hallucinogenic effects of grand wormwood, aka artemisia absinthium, are thought to have been overstated. It’s basically impossible on the allowed minute dosage of 35 parts per million. Sure, in the past people used to go doolally on the green stuff, but that is now thought to have more to do with its incredibly high alcohol content. We’re talking, teetering on the brink of 74% abv in some bottles. You would die of alcohol poisoning many times over before succumbing to thujone toxicity.

On a lighter note, absinthe has found its mojo again, featured as the headliner on cocktail lists, bringing an element of danger with it wherever it goes. The new absinthe menu at Hotel Café Royal takes authenticity to an almost immersive experience level, Belle Epoque glass urn, sugar lumps and all. Then there’s the Absinthe Parlour in East London and Blondies in Clapton selling ‘absinthe slushies’.

Producers are experimenting with barrel-aged version and even Crème d’Absinthe which is more like a liqueur, is less formidable and has the potential to draw new drinkers into the category.

Then, there’s green, herbal tinctures like Chartreuse and Crème de Menthe that are gathering momentum and guaranteed to give you the green light to experiment with your cocktails at home.

And here are some ways to do just that…

Absinthe on the rocks

Devil’s Botany Absinthe Regalis, £54.95, devilsbotany.com

This is the first absinthe distillery in the UK, and it’s in East London, obvs. The founders haven’t just revived absinthe (reference to the Corpse Reviver cocktail, see what I did there?), they’ve reimagined it. This is the grande dame of absinthes, made with the infamous trinity of grand wormwood, green anise and fennel seed, along with host of botanicals found growing wild across Britain. The anise notes are offset by earthy coriander seed, fresh dill, caraway seed and lemon thyme notes. Delicious, and the best bit, it ‘louches’ (becomes cloudy) on contact with water.

Sip an ‘Absentini’

Devil’s Botany London Absinthe, £38, threshers.co.uk

They’ve made this in the style of a London Dry gin, plus, they also make a London dry gin. Produced specifically for cocktails, this clean, colourless absinthe cleverly doesn’t cloud on contact with other liquids. The anise profile is super subtle here, in fact you get more of a blossomy noseful thanks to locally-grown meadowsweet and elderflower. Try it instead of gin or vodka, with dry vermouth in an Absentini.

Serve it neat

Devil’s Botany Chocolate Absinthe Liqueur, £27.25, thewhiskyexchange.com

I have to tell you that this is delicious. We all know that mint and chocolate go together as flavour profiles, but so too does aniseed and chocolate. They blend the finest cacao with their absinthe distillate, giving seriously moreish mint chocolate flavours with hints of liquorice. You could even try this in an Espresso Martini for ultra decadence.

Make a very boozy hot chocolate

This iconic/notorious drink has been flavoured with extracts of 132 plants, so its almost part of your five-a-day. Famously produced by Carthusian monks, with only two brothers at a time privy to the recipe. The chlorophyll in the plants gives it its Grinch-coloured hue, and it’s so deeply herbaceous as to taste medicinal. If you’ve ever been skiing, you’ll know that it’s a staple in hot chocolates slope-side for a reason (it’s 55% alcohol).

Enjoy a Mint Choc Chip Martini

Hands up, who associates Crème de Menthe with the sticky green bottle at the back of you parents’ drinks cupboard? So, more power to Tempus Fugit spirits for de-naffing said liqueur, and doing so as authentically as they could. Having cross-referenced manuals in three languages, they found out that it’s a complex spirit that can’t be made just from mint. Pour 50ml Baileys, 15ml Crème de Menthe, 75ml half half (milk/cream) into a shaker with ice, shake and pour into a coupe glass, garnish with fresh mint with mint-chocolate grated over it. Voila, the Mint Chocolate Chip Martini.

Everyone’s favourite makeup brand and perfumery, Glossier, has just launched another iteration of it’s viral, statement fragrance – and we’re excited.

Glossier’s signature scent is the classic You fragrance. Spritzed throughout the store and lacing our online orders, we’re drenched in the addictive fragrance. 

Fast forward to present day, and Glossier is set to launch another new fragrance. Introducing Glossier You Fleur. 

The label launched the standalone scent in 2017, which sold out due to popular demand – naturally. 

Over the years, Glossier has restocked the hit fragrance several times, launched a travel size version, as well as a solid perfume, deodorant and a scented candle. 

Just last year, the brand expanded its collection for the first time with two scents, You Rêve and You Doux, which equally impressed shoppers looking for a mysterious evening scent, and fresher take on the classic. 

And now here we are with another hit fragrance on our hands. Glossier really know their skin-like scents, and we’re obsessed.

Glossier YOU Fleur 50ml

Glossier YOU Fleur is the perfect light and fresh yet gently floral scent. It boasts notes of ylang ylang and sweet apricot, with mineral salt accord, woody-notes of cashmeran and suede, yet floral tones of osmanthus. The multi-layered scent has been designed as a skin-scent enhancer you can layer with other fragrances.

What we love about Glossier’s fragrances is that the quartet have all been designed to be skin-scent enhancers. 

While you can wear them on their own due to their ability to stand out perfectly last all day, they can also be layered beautifully with other fragrances, too.

Glossier You Fleur has been described by the brand as’an airy and luminous floral blend’, boasting a multi-layered descent into fresh notes of mineral salt accord, sweet apricot and floral ylang ylang.

Contrasting this are notes of deep, woody and warming cashmeran, osmanthus and ambrox. 

This medley of fragrance profiles creates a warm, musky base, with light and fresh top notes which lasts throughout the day. 

While there are numerous ingredients, the key fragrance note is the wearer’s natural skin, which is the secret to why Glossier’s fragrances smell slightly different on every wearer. A skin scent blends with the wearer’s unique scent for a bespoke fragrance.

You Doux is fresh and floral, the original You (my go-to for day and night) is warm and familiar, while You Rêve is a more opulent evening scent. So where does Glossier You Fleur sit within the existing trifecta? 

According to Glossier’s website, the new release ‘shares the same warm, musky base note as Glossier You’, with the light notes of the fresh, spring-inspired You Doux, and the warm, deeper undercurrent found in You Rêve.

So, in answer to our own question, it appears to be a combination of all three. 

Glossier prides itself on being a cruelty-free brand, and You Fleur is also vegan. 

The new fragrance will be available to shop in a travel-friendly 8ml for £32, as well as a 50ml bottle for £70 – making the larger version excellent value for money. 

Glossier’s You Fleur is set to launch on 27th March, just days before Mother’s Day, so it makes the perfect gift for you and your mother figure. 

While we are waiting in anticipation to get our hands on the fragrance to give you a full review, some lucky shoppers have beat us to it and have high praise for Glossier’s new addition to its ever-expanding fragrance range.  

Glossier shopper, Jessica, tested the fragrance ahead of its official launch, and said: ‘Such an inviting scent! This is my favorite release so far (aside from the OG) and it’s super fun to layer with Doux and Reve.

‘Fleur is summery, with a hint of salt; soft and warm from the cashmeran; with some sweetness from the apricot. Definitely my new go to!’

Another shopper named Eliza added: ‘The fragrance is so delicate and light but it feels so luxurious.’

It’s not exactly alike as BR540’s hallmark notes of saffron, jasmin and ambroxan simply aren’t there, but it’s definitely comparable in some aspects. I’d say it’s a sweeter, creamier and more playful version of Cloud.

Expecting the scent to disappear after an hour, I carried on with my day but started to notice the scent several hours after my Superdrug spritz. So often celebrity scents lack longevity but I must say, this one did linger on throughout the day and lasted well.

After my epiphany, it didn’t take long for a bottle of Cloud to earn a permanent spot in my fragrance collection. And I’m not the only one. The fragrance has racked up thousands of rave reviews online, with fans hailing it as their ‘most-complimented’ scent ever.

One reviewer, Dalton O, wrote: ‘Ariana Grande Cloud Eau de Parfum is everything you could want in a fragrance – sweet, dreamy, and perfectly balanced. It wraps you in a soft, airy scent that feels comforting yet luxurious. This perfume is an absolute favorite! The only downside is that men love it and I hate men.’

Keeping up with packing at the supermarket checkout these days often feels like an Olympic sport — especially if you shop at Aldi.

The experience is then made all the more stressful by customers behind you at the till encroaching on your space, rushing you along.

According to some shoppers, there’s an ‘unspoken’ rule that should always be followed while packing bags, but it seems many people missed the memo, and it never fails to leave others fuming.

Taking to the Hemel Online Facebook group, a user named Paul Allan explained that if someone is in the packing area of the supermarket checkout, then the next shopper should remain by their food on the conveyor belt. 

He continued: ‘You can’t come and wait by the card machine, as I’m going to need to come back to that area once everything is scanned. Just back off.

‘And facing/staring directly at me will not make me pack any quicker.’

Fellow supermarket-goers were quick to agree that this behaviour was a real bugbear for them, and it prompted fury in the comments.

Mel Ellingham replied: ‘Hate this! I’ve told people to get outta my space many a time, and people who lean over me to reach something… either f***ing wait or say excuse me.’

Justin Phillipps agreed: ‘It’s called manners and showing a bit of patience.’

‘Amen,’ praised Lynn Matthews. 

Vicci Slade chimed into the conversation to say she also dislikes it when people start loading their shopping onto the belt behind you, before you’ve even finished putting your own shopping on.

Meanwhile Fran Benham shared a cracking anecdote about a time when she saw karma be dealt swiftly to someone who tried to rush the person in front of them, commenting: ‘A lady was finishing packing before paying and a young gentleman behind her leaned across to get a carrier bag from the end of the counter… and his watch paid for her shopping.’

However, some people didn’t see an issue with any of the above, and urged those who were getting worked up about it to ‘try yoga’.

Others claimed that the rule only applies in some supermarkets, with the exception of Aldi, because of the packing shelf.If you’ve ever been to Aldi, you might have noticed that behind the tills, along the windows, is a long black shelf that runs all the way toward the exit.

According to TikTok user @cookingwithtubz2 this is the ‘packing shelf’ and it’s where you’re actually meant to put your shopping. Yep, it’s that simple.

Instead of trying to load it all into bags as it’s scanned, you slide all the items straight back into your trolley, then head to the shelf and sort it all out there once you’ve paid.

In a viral clip, they explained: ‘[It] means you get out of the way quicker for the other customers and then out of the door.’

This comes after Aldi shoppers discovered a little-known rule for using the bargain retailer’s self-service checkouts.

It all started on X (formerly Twitter), as customer Tracy (@Simple9950) asked the chain about being turned away from the self-checkout for having too much shopping.

‘Since when did you have 20 items or less on your self-service checkouts?’ she wrote. ‘There is no sign saying so. Be nice to know in advance which self-service checkout I can go to.’

As the disgruntled shopper made her feelings known, Aldi confirmed that the stipulation is in place, replying: ‘All stores currently have a 20-item limit on self-checkouts.

‘This change is designed to make it simpler and more efficient for you to shop with us. All customers can still use checkouts managed by our amazing colleagues.’

‘The little keyrings that they had – I wanted to buy them all. They also had these little figures you could get, and they did Toy Story, [Lilo and] Stitch, Disney Princess, Care Bears…they were just too cute.’

Elsewhere, @gothiquegirly filmed herself taking her partner to a Miniso store, joking: ‘me taking him to the pinkest, cutest, girliest store in the mall,’ while @rinawyd said: ‘buying everything my girlfriend touches from Miniso.’

Remember Blockbuster? If you’re under the age of 18, you probably don’t.

The famous store disappeared from the UK high street back in 2013, as trips to the ‘video shop’ were replaced with scrolling through Netflix.

Now, Blockbuster leaves us nostalgic for a simpler time, when you’d wait for months to finally watch a film you’d missed in the cinema, and your mum would let you rent a video for a sleepover with your mates.

But you don’t have to reminisce for much longer as, for a limited time only, Blockbuster is back on the UK high street.

In collaboration with KitKat, Blockbuster will be reopening in London’s Soho.

The pop-up store is to celebrate the launch of KitKat’s sharing bars, which come in three flavours: double chocolate, salted caramel and hazelnut.

Open from April 9th to 12th, visitors will be greeted with rows of the iconic blue and yellow video cases, and a chill out zone with retro televisions.

The video renting experience has had a bit of a 2025 upgrade though.

You can choose a movie, and take the empty VHS case to the counter, where you’ll be given a streaming code for your chosen film. You’ll also get a free KitKat sharing bar to tuck into while you watch.

Stephanie Scales, marketing manager for KitKat at Nestlé UK & Ireland, said: ‘It’s more important than ever to stay connected with others in today’s hectic world.

‘Whether it’s with friends, family or loved ones, we want to take the nation back to when times were simpler and reclaim the joy of picking out a movie to watch together.

‘By KitKat sharing bars partnering with Blockbuster to take cosy nights in together to another level, we hope that we can help Brits properly savour their downtime and break better!’

Blockbuster’s mini-return comes in the wake of news that another much-missed could soon be making a comeback.

Earlier this month, Topshop whipped shoppers up into a frenzy with some cryptic Instagram posts.

The iconic fashion brand uploaded three clips, with captions that together read: ‘We’ve been listening.’

One clip also featured the words: ‘We’ve missed you too.’

It’s been four years since Big Topshop, aka their flagship Oxford Street store, closed its doors, and many are still grieving. The social media posts left fans wondering if a bricks and mortar store could be returning.

However, the retailer revealed that the ‘first phase’ of their ‘much anticipated return’ was the relaunch of Topshop.com, and at this stage, have no updates on the launch of a store.

ghd was the first hair brand I ever used. Honestly! And now you can snap up their iconic straighteners for less in the Amazon Spring Deal Days.

Back in the early noughties I saved all my birthday and Christmas money, did as many chores necessary to earn some pocket money, just to be able to buy my very own pair of ghd straighteners – and over 20 years later I still use them. 

What I really needed was Amazon’s Spring Deal Days sale to save me weeks of doing the ironing, washing up and cleaning the car.

The Original Styler remains my go-to hair tool as it glides through my long frizzy mane effortlessly, and instantly straightens the section of hair in seconds – without the need to run over the same strand of hair time and time again.

Supermarket checkout changes are often met with criticism, but this update from Morrisons is likely to please parents shopping this weekend.

In celebration of Mother’s Day 2025, the retailer is opening mums-only checkout lanes across all supermarkets.

On March 30, Mothering Sunday only, the ‘Morri-mums’ checkouts will be available to mums, with assistants giving special treatment to these VIPs.

Checkout assistants will ‘offer to scan items at a speed to suit each individual mum and help with packing the shopping should mums wish them to.’

Staff will also offer to entertain bored kids by asking them to identify different sorts of supermarket products and inviting them to see how they operate the tills.

All 497 stores will have the Mums’ Lanes open this Sunday and, to sweeten the deal (pun intended), Morrisons will be giving away 50,000 boxes of Guylian chocolates at the mums-only tills, which is bound to raise a smile.

Gareth Lloyd, head of marketing events at Morrisons, said: ‘The reality is that many mums still end up doing chores like the weekly shop on Mother’s Day – even though it is supposed to be the day that they are spoiled!

‘Therefore, we’ve launched Mums’ Lanes in stores to give a little something back to all the mums shopping with us on their special day.’

Checkout changes, particularly those that involve reducing that amount of human contact, are often met with controversy by shoppers.

In January, M&S announced they’d be trailling smart checkouts, that calculate how much you owe, without you lifting a finger.

The big change meant all shoppers had to do is place their items on the till, which can identify what has put down and how much everything costs, thanks to a chip embedded in each product’s price tag.

But customers complained that it would make shopping a ‘sterile chore’.

Another said: ‘Not impressed! I refuse to use self checkout! I expect personal service.

A third said: ‘I’ll wait to deal with a real person on a checkout.’
